GERMAN EMPIRE: 3 Mark Baden 1908

Friedrich II. Grand Duke of Baden

was born on Jul.09.1857 in Karlsruhe. He got ahead in the army.

On Sep.20.1885 he married Princess Hilda of Nassau & Luxemburg, it was a love-match but, unfortunatelly for both
issueless. They lived unsettled in different garrison towns for 17 years.
Friedrich ailed often so in 1902 he retired from the commandership of the VIII. Batallion in rank of a major general.

Friedrich II. started to reign when his father Friedrich I. died on Sep.28.1907.

The picture shows Grand Duke Friedrich II. and Grand Duchess Hilda on their silver wedding anniversary in 1910.

With the end of WWI. and the ensuing proclamation of the republic he was forced to abdicate.
The last Grand Duke of Baden lived in privacy in Freiburg and Badenweiler where he died critically ill on Aug.09.1928
at the age of 71.

On the picture below you see a 3 Mark coin, strucked 1908 in Karlsruhe (G),
Mintage is 304.927

It was not easy to get the colors, I did my best:

Nice coin and a nice story. image

For me Badan seems to be one of the eaisier states to find, has that been your experience as well?

Interesting that the Grand Duke has a mustache just the Kaiser. It remind me of Saddam Hussain would wander around with his entourage of shorter, pudgier Saddam look alikes.

For Empire coins this is my experience also, except the 2 Mark coin type of Friedrich II and the coins of Friedrich I. with the first obverse-design. They are really expensive in high grades.

Now that you said so, there is a affinity indeed, I didn't associate with Saddam till now. image

Ok, but in the best times the Emperors mustache was a bit more unusual I think.

  • Isn't that the type of moustache that the military men from Austria-Hungary wore around the beginning of the 20th century?

Thanks for the history lesson. Nice coin. I think waxed mustaches were a status symbol. This medal is Austrian but the mustache is crazy

    Nicely done, Udo. image

I love that excellent photograph and story with the coin - striking couple.

However, the coin is even nicer. image

    Thanks everybody image

wildjag, that's a nice medal and the mustache is indeed very impressive!

When he was a young man, he certainly lived there. In his days as a soldier he lived in Freiburg, Berlin and Koblenz.
After his father's death they didn't move into Karlsruhe Schloss, they left it to his mother Luise of Baden and continued
living in a Palais at Kriegsstraße.
