What's the difference??

When you purchase a roll of coins say on Ebay, a lot of people tend to mentin if the coins are head/tail, head/head or tail/tail. What's difference?? Does one imply they aren't new and unopened? What's the best way to tell if you are getting a genuine, unopened roll of coins? image

Thanks

The heads/tails just means that at one end of the roll you see the obverse of the coin and the other end you see the reverse. Original bankrolls come in all of those varieties. Telling whether it's orginal is something else. Some are and some aren't. I've gotten rolls claiming to be original, and ended up having a mix of dates inside.

What they sometimes forget to tell you is that they put it in a numistube "because the wrapper was falling apart". Yeah right!

  • I got a roll of coins from guy and he stated they were never opened, tight rolls but when I got them they weren't that tight. Made me curious but I don't know I could possibly tell that they were really original. I knew that heads/tails meant obverse on one side and reverse on the other, i just didn't know if that's how they came from the banks or if that was a sign of if they had been tampered with. Thanks for the info image

Could you tell me what type of wrapping it had? Plastic or paper? If it is paper are the ends rolled up, or can you just open the roll by unfolding the top?

  • Well this was almost 2 weeks ago but it was an older looking paper roll and the ends were rolled/tucked under but kind of loose.....not tight like what i get from the mint anyway.....but they were 1961 P lincolns. Here is a link to my purcahse if you would be willing to look and give me your input. Thanks image

  • Looks like they may have been tampered with.

  • Just because the roll is crimped at the ends, it doesn't mean the roll is original. I've seen small crimping devices, being sold on Ebay, that crimp the ends of paper coin rolls, which make them appear like "original" bank rolls.
  • I wondered that myself. Even more so when I went to open them and they weren't tight as stated in the auction. Live and learn I guess image
