Pope John Paul I 1000 Lire - Pope for one month

This is one of the coins I got from Ajaan today. John Paul I was Pope for only 33 days in the fall of 1978 and this is the only coin type issued during his Pontificate.

Nice coin. As much as I hate to compliment an Arsenal fan, ajaan has good taste in coins.

As nice as Michael's image is, the coin is really nicer than shown. I may regret letting this one go. Oh well! it has a good home.

this is the only coin type issued during his Pontificate.

According to Berman (and my memory which is increasingly unreliable) this is actually a posthumous issue, issued (as I recall) during the 1st year of JP II. The annual medal was similarly issued after the death of JP I, altho you wouldn't know it from just looking at it.

Both still count as a way to "cover" the pope in your collection and are interesting pieces.

My copy of Berman came in the mail today and your memory is correct, that coin was issued after JPI passed away, however Berman does not say when. I would assume that it was issued in 1978 as that is the date on the coin, but who knows they may have made them for as long as they were selling.
