Question for Canadians...

Hi,

I just received my submission back from PSA. The Post Office here made me pay $25 just to get them back. They charged GST and an $8 handling fee at the border. I argued with him that these were my cards that I was simply having graded but he wasn't the one to argue with. Just wondering of others on this board have had to pay GST on a returned submission. Is there a way I can get it back?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

  • Well you can fill out the tax forms and mail them in. If you can prove the value of the item (or service) they will give you a refund that will probably take around 2-3 months.

I grade through Platinum promotions who basically tax you at the start and add the HST on top. At least you don't get nailed with larger tax BS and handling fee's (now there's a useless service!)......ah well.

If you relatives in the US it's easier to ship to them and have them ship them to you as a "GIFT" or some other express service without slapping large $$$$ values on the box. My all time favourite was a customs agent (really dumb woman) who actually had a Beckett and said the cards in the package were worth $600US and I'd be taxed on that. I had to explain that it was a trade and NOTHING was purchased. Also, the price guide is a reference and there was no way the cards were worth what the guide stated. Canada customs just smells period.

  • I'm in New Bruswick, Canada. When I made my submission. I wasn't charged GST that I know of. I sent the cards in, paid the amount showing on the submission form (that's it) and a few weeks later, they were in my mailbox again. No other charges or troubles on my end.

Brunell: This is why I go through "PSA Canada's" Len Potti. It may take an extra few weeks but at least that won't happen.

Go HERE If it were me I would choose to go to customs office nearest to me with the PSA form and everything you have to explain everything in person. Things usually go more smoothly in person.

Customs & Revenue Canada is a small step above organized crime. That's why I have a mailbox in the states.
  • vincecarder- I think I was stopped by that same lady at the border one year coming back from Toronto. Her and two cronies ransacked our car and "found" a bunch of hockey cards which were actually cards we brought up with us. She spreads the cards out on the table and says "made in Canada, these are Canadian property." I quickly replied " The Mercedes you just trashed was made in Germany, must be German property by your logic." Her cronies could barely keep a straight face. They kept us for 4 hours (trying to find receipts and trying to get us to admit we bought the cards in Canada). We ended up paying about $200.00 US to just get back on the road. Very shady operation I thought. Maybe she had a sister. LOL
