1976/77 Topps Basketball Box - Sell it whole or by packs

I have a 1976/77 Topps Basketball Wax Box. The box is worn but the packs are in great condition. Should I sell the box as a whole or by pack? Also, does pack grading actually add value when it comes to selling.

I thought about opening the packs and sending the best into PSA, however I have no experience on how sharp the cards are out of the box.

  • Centering and print defects are the issues with these Tall Boys. Since the box is worn and the packs are clean, I would get the packs graded and sell them individually. This is a very tough issue so opening them to find some gems may not be too wise. Unless, of course, you pull a clean, well centered, Dr. J or David Thompson. There are currently no PSA 10's of either of these. image

Thanks Scott. I see that you are working on the set. Good Luck.

This is one of those sets that's worth considerably more unopened, kind of like the 76 Topps baseball. Here's why:

    - As Scott mentioned the cards are very tough condition-wise. The larger card means there's more that can be wrong with it.

    - There aren't enough high-dollar AND desirable cards in the set. You're going to get about $30-40 per pack, and you're going to need a fantastic pull to make it worthwhile to open them. If the box isn't case fresh the odds are against you doing better by opening.

    - The rarity of the unopened material will drive the price up. There are 3 boxes on ebay right now- see how they do and decide what's best.

    - This is all coming from a guy who looks for excuses to open any wax I can get my hands on.
