setbuilders had a lot of 51-54 stuff up on ebay late yesterday...a lot of them were actually relatively priced well...got the paige well below SMR.

What is the link to setbuilders?

hmmm, im not sure they have a site. I bought this off ebay...they have two accounts: setbuilders and setbuilders2. I believe the guy who runs it, Joe, posts here sometimes under the name "norty."

Just purchased my first PSA 9 for my 1967 set that I am putting together (slowly that is!). Waiting for it to arrive though. Prices going through the ceiling for PSA 9 67s!?

I picked up a couple cards for my fledgling HOF rookie collection:

I picked up a few auto'ed books. George Brett, Cal Ripken, Wilt Chamberlain and the ever affable signer - Bill Russell!

And for the boxer fans out there - this is the cousin to the T3 set - T9 boxers; also picked up a Sullivan.

And last this came back from PSA:

I had picked it up raw from SG Gaynor on ebay.

I agree they have great stuff. Their ID on eBay is set-builders and set-builders2. Seems like the set-builders ID is more for selling. Here's a link to their current auctions:

very nice feller. why the 3? Looks like it could have graded higher.

<< <i>Very nice Paige card - are you doing the set in PSA? >>

Stone...i'm not. i toyed around with doing it, but i just dont have the money to handle such a sought after set. My prime collection is a HOF rookie set...and then 51 bowman..and then anything greg maddux or hank aaron. For the moment, i know i cant afford certain rookies....like paige or even williams....that's why i get the next best thing...their cards from my favorite sets. for williams, i got a 51 bowman. for paige, a 53 topps.

and that's a very nice doyle...must have cost a pretty penny!
  • Awesome stuff everyone, this is what collecting's all about.

Dandy - There is a small stain on the back of the Feller, but I still think it presents really well. Are you collecting pre-war HOF rookies as well?

Stone - I'd like to check out a scan of the Brett and Ripken books. How do you display your auto'd books?

at the moment, im collecting pre war and post war HOF rookies. daunting task,i know....but, keeps me excited. right now, given my limited budget, i've focused on rookie cards that both fits this set and fits my eye appeal...so, even though a bill mazeroski or jim bunning 1957 topps rookie card would fit my HOF rookie set...given that i dont have the cash to throw around...i would rather spend that money on say a 1955 koufax...a card i truly like.

I'm doing the same. Just creating the list of "rookies" is a daunting task in of itself. Just curious, what are your thoughts on Exhibits...do you consider them to be rookie cards?

  • << <i>Just curious, what are your thoughts on Exhibits...do you consider them to be rookie cards? >>

My opinion on exhibits have evolved. Currently, i dont consider them rookie cards for the most part...which is fine, say, when you are dealing with players of the 40's or 50's. I have an aaron exhibit and considered it a rookie card along with his johnston cookies and topps cards. I bought also musial and mays exhibits thinking the same thing. Now, i dont consider them rookies...mainly because of the presence of topps, leaf and bowman in that era. I've sold my mays and musial exhibits (kept aaron because i collect him).

but, when you are dealing with pre war players....it's a little different given that other than goudey and diamond stars...there are no "big" sets like topps, bowman and leaf. In those cases when a player first appears in the majors and the only available card of that player in that year is an exhibit...i consider that a rookie. otherwise, if there is another set in that year that was more widely distributed....i would consider that his rookie card. basically, exhibits take a back seat to other sets. if the only card of that player when he first broke into the league is an exhibit..than i consider the exhibit the rookie card.

I went to card show this weekend, spent almost $100, and can barely remember what I bought. It was almost all stuff to flip on ebay (shameless plug for my auctions below). My best pickup was this, an Alex Gordon autograph #76/100:
    image

It'll probably sell nicely come draft time, as he's being mentioned as the possible #1 overall. My best recent keeper pickup was a CGC 9.8 X-Men #137. Totally sweet book, and reasonably priced. Population on that book is high compared to other books around it, but given the current state of the Byrne/Claremont X-Men market, it was a good deal. Oh, I'm sorry, we're talking about baseball cards. No, nothing terribly exciting at the moment. I'm just wishing I could get done my $1000 quest and my 1975 Topps set so I could dive wholeheartedly into something new. That 38 Goudey looks tempting. Hmmm...
    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay

    Oak
I have them on a shelf - there's no other way to display that many books - my favorite is Ali. I will scan the other books after. The Brett is one of those books that has a numbered amount of autos to 3000.

<< <i>Mike, another gorgeous T-3. Do you have your T-3s on the registry? >>

No Mac - probably just lazy I guess. I have a bunch of friends who have recently jumped into the set and one of them has just received 15 back from PSA! Average grade about 4? I have a bunch of 1s due to pin holes - now that puts me in awe. I did have one setback - one of the oldest ones I own - T3 Wallace was returned with evidence of trimming - I was disappointed since I bought it from Superior back in 1992 and would not have expected that - to my fault tho, I did not measure the card - my bad!!!

I've been busy buying stuff... I came across a nice large lot of 1974 Deckle Edge this afternoon at a local show which included these gems which will shortly be off to PSA... (by the way, if anyone is looking for Deckle Edge cards, I now have a ton of them and they are all in very nice shape)

Earlier in the week, I managed to get my hands on this beauty

    image

As I watch my stock portfolio spiral into the toilet lately, it makes it that much more justified (to myself & my dad) for me to go out and spend ridiculous money on rare pieces of cardboard which have a much better chance of retaining their value as well as growing.

    Mike,
I'm new to the pre-war scene, but that T3 you got this week interested me. I did an ebay search for 'turkey red' and also for 't3' and found none of either. Am I looking in the wrong place, or are these just very rare? I've seen scans of quite a few on here, and it seems like EVERYTHING is on ebay. Where do you find these? Also (gulp) what kind of prices do lower grade ones command? Sorry for all the questions.

    thanks
    John

Oak - here's the Ripken book I picked up recently:

Books are not that popular, I believe, so they can be picked up at a reasonable price - this one is PSA/DNA also.

Here's one this morning: ebay item: 5156195434
This seller has a store on ebay and seems to have about 20 T3s up for sale. I don't know anything about the seller, but his feedback is good. There seem to be a few if you put in T3 and search for Sports Mem, yada yada. They are very pretty cards. I'm trying to resist the temptation to buy any until I find a finger in my salad or some other stroke of good fortune.

The Wheat cards have been up for a long time with the BIN on them - I think it is the general perception of most of us that these cards are a bit overgraded. That's why they are sitting there. But, thanx for taking the time to do a search!

This isn't worth starting a new thread over, so hopefully I can get some feedback from you guys. Could I have some opinions on this auction?

    image

The corners are weak and I've seen much, much worse; however, it's crease free with a white back and I think overall, it's a decent looking card. I need it for my '55T set and the price was too good to pass up. Plus, he screwed up on the number (listed as #200 when it's really #210), so I thought it may sneak under the radar. I informed the Seller that I would be submitting the card to PSA for grading and asked if it came back with evidence of trimming, would he give a refund. Up to now, no response.

Honest answers, please... Don't worry, no hard feelings image

    EDIT for update.

Offered to send in card himself and if it were to come back at EX or better, he would charge me book. While I appreciated his offer, I declined and thanked him for being candid. If only there were more sellers like this guy (hopefully).

Thanks, Stone. Your Doyle isn't too shabby either. I love those T3's, but I know that if I pick one up, it'll just expedite my inevitable journey toward penniless insanity.

He probably wont get book on EX or EX-MT for that card. That's why he offered it to you. It's likely not trimmed or altered...and as long as the dealer has a good rep, you shouldnt worry. just my opinion.

Thanks for the input. Based upon what I've seen it go for in comparable grade and being a priority of mine, it was worth the risk. Him offering to grade it was just icing in the cake image

Those are absolutely rock solid PSA 6's!! I'm a big fan of this grade since they can be picked up more affordably and look fantastic!
