And wow, can Sheffield be any more of a baby? He takes a swipe at the fan BEFORE throwing the ball in?

What a moron. Guess it's roid rage acting up again.

My beef is make the play before you get into with the fan. But Sheffield needs to control that temper...what a putz.

I see the ignorant are quick to jump to conclusions once again regarding the "ill" effects of steroids. I applaud Sheffield for controlling his emotions. When someone takes a swing at you, your natural reaction is to defend yourself either by flight or fight. He defended himself by fight, which was a natural reaction. Roid rage has nothing to do with it.

The question we all need to ask is: "HOW MUCH DID THIS GUY HAVE TO DRINK PRIOR TO THAT PLAY?" Of course, we will never get an answer since the truth hurts too much and there is too much money involved.

And no, Gary should not have hit the guy as someone suggested. He did the professional thing and restrained himself. Hats off to security as well. They got there quickly.

And I'm sure in retrospect, Gary agrees with you, but in the heat of the moment, things work differently.

Yeah because it makes more sense to get into a beef with a fan than make the play....

    Reallll smart.

And odds on Spammy making an appearance tonight? I am guessing slim to none, with slim just walking out the door.

    Axell Rose,

My dear boy, Sheffield did the mature thing. You would have done this:

Sure he did the 'right thing'.

The right thing would have been to shut his trap and make the play.

  • Some aweful calls in that game. Womack wasn't even close to being out to leadoff, which would have given the Yankees the lead, and I thought that bases loaded called ball four in the fourth to spark the Yankees rally was a bad call too.

I understand the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry and thought it was a good game, but I believe ESPN should have covered the Nationals game on opening day in DC.

Did they kick the other fan (who pretended to spill the beer on sheff) off the stadium, too ? Replay (slow motion) showed beer spilled was intentional. The man moved his hand before the lady moved toward his side.

    Sheffield did the right thing.

Sheffield was real poised today! This should do a lot in affirming his reputation as a good guy.

How bad was the home plate umpire in this game? That ball 4 call that loaded the bases and sparked the Yank rally was a perfect strike 3 - not even close, but he blew it! And, it wasn't his only bad call behind there (for both sides actually)...

The fan was definitely wrong for getting involved in the play at all, and he deserved to be thrown out. Whether or not he tried to hit Sheffield is questionable though - as you watch the replay, the guy isn't even looking in Sheffield's direction (he is looking at the ball). Let's not make Sheffield out to be Mother Teresa here either, he did shove the fan and wind up to punch him out - and during that, he sent other female fans in the area sprawling to the ground (which caused the beer spill). This is not a defense at all of the fan who was wrong, but even Yankee lemming Michael Kay (who never, ever, ever says a bad thing about anything related to the Yanks) said he wasn't sure if the fan was taking a shot at Sheffield.

By the way, we won 8-5! And, the Big Unit was less than impressive. Again. image

I thought Sheff held back well enough. I give him credit for that. Whether it was intentional or not, the fan did interfere and if it was me that got swiped in the face like that, I would taken the idiot's head off so I can't fault Sheff for being a little PO'd.

Anyway, I'm not surprised the Sox ripped into Randy. I'm sure Mr. Johnson finally realized that pitching in the AL East is a helluvalot different than pitching in AZ. Johnson never really had a good record pitching in the AL East anyway. I ripped this from one the big sports sites last year, but I don't remember which one.

Crazy talk people saying that Sheffield 'held back'.

Had he been so 'poised' or 'restrained' he wouldn't have gotten involved at all.

How is this so much more different than the yankees fan who stole the ball and made it into a home run against the orioles a few years back?

  • It didn't look to me like the fan "swung" at him. Not even close to a swing

His arm kind of swooped across. More like he was trying to knock his cap off

I'm sure we'll only see it 250 more times this weekend on ESPN. You tell me that was a swing. Scheffield should be commended? uhhhhh, yah.

    Typical yankee overreaction.

Sheffield says he didn't know if his lip was busted...what a wimp. All the guy did was swipe the fence and Sheff's hat was there...the guy was wrong, yes, for interfering in the play, but Sheff waaaaay overreacted in shoving the guy.

A Yankee fan interferring in a game with Baltimore that resulted in a NY home run?

That was not a few years ago, unless more incidents like that happened. Over 10 years ago, Don Mattingly launched a ball way up and a fan reached out and caught it. It was ruled a home run. The officials could have ruled it a ground rule double, but they thought the ball was going to go out anyway.

    DeutscherGeist,

It was 1996 Playoffs against the Orioles...Jeter's Rookie year. Jeter hit the HR and a 13 year old kid whose name was Jeffrey Mayer interfered. He was on Letterman the next night.

    Jeffrey Mayer Derek Jeter

So that makes ok, since it was so long ago?

See, typical yankee attitude. It's ok when it goes in your favor, a travesty when it happens against the mighty yankees.

The officials never even got together to discuss it. The kid even said on letterman that he knew it wasn't a home run.

  • Face it folks. MLB folded its tent about 10 years ago.

Ironically the YES Network is showing the right now....1996 ALCS Yankees vs. Baltimore. And there was Jeffrey Mayer allowing Jeter to tie the game 4-4 with his "Homer".

    Axtell,

Ok, you are referring to 1996 then. Yes, I remember that too. I am not condoning bad calls no matter which side benefits. I was just criticizing what was "a few years ago." Even Jeter's incident was 9 years ago and not just a few. Just because it happened a long time ago does not make it OK either--don't put words in my mouth. The officials have to decide the call, not you or I. Officials make mistakes to the benefit of the Yankees and to their deteriment. I wish it was all accurate.
