New German coins

Bought these recently, wanted to get the 5 Reichpfennig collection kick-started (Berlin mint only in UNC)

I bought three, 1937, 1940 and 1942.

Here's two of them, not everyone's cup of tea but they are witness to a major historial event of the 20th century. I wanted something that illustrated why the Second World War occured and some of the ideology that led to it.

Thus i picked the 5 Reichspfennig (okay i like the size of them).

The patriotic display on the obverse harks back to both Imperial Rome as well as Germany's tradition of placing the eagle on the coin anyhow. It shows the Swastika (often seen as the very representation of evil) corrupted by Hitler as it originally (in it's reversed form) was a symbol of good luck. (You could say reversing the symbol polarised the meaning there).

The design of course illustrating the fascist ideology of a nation steeped in it's own patriotism, very symbolistic of the times.

And better still the change in alloy usage from a brass alloy to zinc illustrates clearly the ravages of war on the economy. Plus i like these inappropriate coinage alloys.

Although the scan doesn't show it there is a fair bit of lustre left on the Zinc one! (Both Graded as MS64), the 1942 being MS63... but that doesn't really mean much to me, UNC should cover it.
