I've collected t206's over the years, and much like the story about why Wagner had the tobacco companies pull his card from the set, I've also heard about a possible portrait variation. Has anyone else heard about this? I've never seen a picture of anything other than the standard portrait, but I have heard about the variation from more than one person.
I first heard about it several years ago, while at a show in Long Island, NY.
It seems that in the early design, the Pittsburg players had a "P" on their jersey, but so did the Philadelphia players. The original idea was to have the letter style different for the two teams, even going so far as to put the letter on opposite sides of the jersey. As the story goes, somebody decided that this would be too confusing for kids, and proceeded to change the Pittsburg players design to the full name.
Since I've never seen one, (nor have I ever heard of someone owning one), I normally wouldn't lend much credibility to the story. However, I've heard about this in different parts of the country, over a long period of time. I know, that doesn't mean squat, but I thought perhaps someone here may have heard about this as well. I'm no expert, I just enjoy collecting t206's, and their history. If you can tell me anything about this, I'd be interested in hearing about it. Thanks.

Don't know if your familiar with this website, but it might be a place to email the proprietors and ask about it there.

do you really think that when designing these TOBACCO CARDS, included in packs of Cigarettes, they considered what the KIDS would think? they were not marketing to kids, but to adult smokers.
<< <i>I have seen a t206 wagner that someone claimed was a var. It had nothing to the "P" on the jersey. It had to do with his eyes. They were either blue or brown the opposite of what is on the regular card. I saw this card about a year ago. It appeared to be authentic but I am by no means a t206 exper >>
The infamous "blue eyes" Wagner. It's a fake. The owner refuses to have it graded, and now ebay refuses to list it. He thinks it's all a grading company conspiracy.
The only variation I've ever heard of was Piedmont vs. Sweet Caporal back. In the mid 70's someone claimed to have a new T206 Wagner, a batting pose, and the news went all thru the hobby. Turned out to be a skinned E card with a T206 back.
Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

Wow, then I guess t206's were never meant to make it into the hands of KIDS, and ol' Honus was misguided when he had his card pulled from distribution so that KIDS would not get their hands on TOBACCO products. (it has been known to happen, by the way).
Or maybe, it's the $ compensation story you prefer. I don't know which is true. What I do know is that I asked a question about something I've heard in the hobby for years, and I'm just curious if anyone else has heard anything similar. And, I have thanked those that have given me some indication of where to inquire further.
I didn't mean to ruffle your feathers.
Peace out.
Hi Mantis,
I was just talking to joe orlando about this exact thing today. It only took about 4 comments before someone started to bash you. Welcome to the PSA board. You have been officially initiated. I think you get a patch or something.
