Home World & Ancient Coins Forum

Hey Philippine collectors, I have a question!

I just had some coins hit grading across the street and this was on the order.
011 1944 D/S USA-PHIL 20C n/a n/a n/a n/a
012 1944 D/S USA-PHIL 20C n/a n/a n/a n/a

How common are the D/S in MS?
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Dunno. Redbook puts 'em at about $100.00 in MS-63 (for whatever that's worth).

  • Only saw 1 in person since I been collecting. Should have bought it. still regret not buying it. Anyway the D/S was really tough to see on the example I saw. Just my 2 centavos worth.

coinage up through 1945 is in the Redbook and the Philippines was a U.S. Territory... MrEureka is arguably correct

  • D/S repunched mint mark S over D I think?

  • Hello XXX:

The D/S is a repunched Mint Mark. The S was the original punch; the D was punched over. The S should be very clear with a loupe, especially on the inside of the D.

And Mad Marty: The 1944 D/S 20 centavo is scarce, but not rare like the 1913-S/S. The current PCGS population (as of January 2005), is 8 in unc. Pretty skinny.

The Red Book doesn’t know the real prices on US Philippines. If you see one in MS 63 for $100, I’d recommend scarfing it up.

    Best wishes,
