1600's and 1700's coins with ships.....

I would like to ask a favor of you. I am interested in buying some older coins with ships on them and am totally oblivious as to where to start looking. The favor I ask is this. Could some of you show pictures of coins from the 1600's and 1700's that have ships on them and what kind of price range the coin you post would be in. The countries I think I would be most interested in would be the UK, France and Spain. Thank you for your efforts!!!!

Well - there are a zillion coins with old sailing ships on them but your restriction to the dates you are looking for leaves out a whole bunch of beauties.

  • Well, I saw a picture of a coin that said Farthing on the bottom but wasnt sure if this one in paticular was a medal or an actual British coin. I am looking for a few coins that would have been in circulation in the U.S. up to the Revolutionary War. Would also consider 1800's. I also think copper coins are more of what I am looking for too. Thanks!!
  • Hi,
Hmm.. well on the UK farthing front two coins spring to mind.
I doubt that either are what you are looking for - but here goes.

    1) Charles II 1662 (no date on coin)
    (Peck 400)
This is a pattern farthing - and was never meant for circulation. However some
are so worn that they must have done.

The reverse shows a three masted sailing ship, the "Sovereign of the seas".
This was the largest ship in existence at that time.
The legend is "QVATVOR MARIA VINDICO" I claim the four seas.

This is a good example. Frustratingly the ship is almost always very worn -
worse than this. I have seen one perfect specimen - it was breathtaking.
Price guide for one this nice : $800 size about 2cm.

    2) George III 1799 farthing.
This has a small ship in the background, to the left of Britannia.
A very common coin. The normal currency copper issue goes for
a few bucks to about $200 depending on condition.

This is a Gilt proof. The coin looks almost perfect in hand - and a bit ropey
when magnified like this. size 2.3 cm

  • check out the silver coins struck for the Dutch Antilles in the 1760's-- a very majestic sailing ship on those
  • Here is the picture that I saw...it was posted by a board member on the other side. Ofcourse credit goes to original poster...but when I saw this I thought...I want one of them!!!! This is the one I was talking about in my second entry to this thread. Is this a coin or a medal?

  • How about any modern coins with ships? image
    Modern Fleet

  • WOW big selection there!!!! Thanks for the link. Very interesting.

Well, I got a coin today! Wasn't with in the parameters I set before.image But I like it.

Its a 1953 Half Penny. The guys at my coinshop gave it to me. They were a little confused as to why I was looking in the foreign coin tray....might have scared them. LOL No just kidding. They are a GREAT couple of guys that ALWAYS do me right! They take good care of me.

I think it is a very attractive design. I like the big ships that take up most of the coin surface.

Thanks for the advice so far!!!!!!

WB - The picture you posted is a Conder token. There are quite a number of Conder tokens that feature ships of various styles. Conder tokens often can be found at a very reasonable price.

    Here are 2 of mine.
