Need information on a coin/country

OK, the particulars are kinda fuzzy. Has anyone ever heard of the country/region/state of Esparanza? I hope that is how it is spelled. A friend of mine is evaluating a collection and he ran across a coin from there. He said the denomination begins with an 's'.

There is the city of Esperanza in Argentina ajaan.
  • IIRC, there was a movement in the late 1800's and early 1900's to create a 'universal' language called "Esperanto." Some of the activity to promote this was the issuance of a form of 'money' denominated in 'Scudos' [again, IIRC]. Maybe this item is one of those 'coins?'

    Just a wild guess...
