It is the first non-Canadian foreign coin I have ever received in change.

  • There were 400 million minted of this quarter sized coin just in that year and more than 10 times that many in the last 20 years. That and the exchange value of about 10 U.S. cents may have something to do with its immigration

I got one of these in my change once as well, in the US that is. I get them in my change everyday here. I must have gotten more than a dozen yesterday when I went on a little shopping trip in the capital.

Strange.... one of my buddies got one of those out of a coke machine on campus a couple weeks ago.
I believe he just spent it later on that day.

Hmmm. Does the coke machine think its a quarter? There was a problem like this a little while back when people would take Korean 500 won coins and spend them in Japanese vending machines as 500 yen coins. Can we now spend 100 won as though it were 25 cents?
  • interesting idea. Anyone ever try to figure out what world coins will work in vending machines. Not that I would ever think of using them as such.

Back in the early 80s the new peso coins from Mexico seemed to work as a quarter, but I'm sure they retooled.

Funny thing, I also scooped on of those 100 won in our vending machine about a year ago....I think it had been rejected and was just lying in the change bin.....even funnier is that it came from our Chinese QC Manager's daughter who happened to be hanging out at work that day......little chiseler thief.

BTW, the old beer can tabs wrapped in a 7-8" strip of electrical tape worked great at our apartment's laundrymat in the late 70s....of course, I just took my stuff home and let mom wash it....image

Yes, the 100 Won coins work and act like quarters in every US vending machine, as far as I know. People used to do that when I was in Korea.
