What To Do With Tons Of 87 Topps And 90 Fleer Unopened?

Ok, I just moved and am looking to clear my collection of more stuff. I have run across maybe five or six boxes of 87 Topps unopened wax, a ton of 87 racks unopened and some 90 Fleer unopened. What would you do with this stuff?

A. Sell it on eBay. Not very attractive. Very little would be realized and shipping costs would kill.

B. Open and cherry pick the pristine cards for grading. Still not very attractive with 10s for these years not realizing major dollars.

C. Just donate the cards to a charity and be done with them.

D. Put them back in the closet and have the wife still ask why I have so much junk lying around.

I am leaning towards C. I may find a 10 quality Rose or Bonds but I am not sure if it is worth it to me to open all the material. A charity would probably get better use out of them.

What would you do?

Good question. I would seem to me if you donated them to a charity, you could take full book value as a tax write off. Maybe I'm wrong.
I've got tons and tons of opened late 80's crap, so when you decide the best option on how to clean out some of this crap, please let me know.

Just remember that 96 SI for kidds was once junk and when everyone throws it away it pays off for those who kept it down the road. I would say just give them to kids at shows and such I am sure pulling a Bonds or Mac Rookie would thrill some kids...
  • I would open the 87 packs and shoot for the gradeable star and rookie cards.

I think you already answered your own question.
If you're considering them as junk then either just open
them up and have some fun with them or donate them.
Here's an idea: do you have little league games going on
in your area? If so, I'd take them there and just give them
to the kids before or after the game. I did that once and it was
one of the best days ever just seeing these kids in their uniform ripping open their
packs and getting comments like "wow, I got a Alex Rodriguez" and "hey, I'll trade
you my Ripken for your Griffey". I think I brought in some new collectors that day.
  • You can indeed write off 100% book value for your donation. I work at a Children's hospital and donations like this go especialy far here, if you have a Children's hospital in your area take them there, nothing better than making the day of a youngster getting to open baseball cards!

Most charities want cash...but why wouldn't certain children's charities want them to distribute to sick or underprivileged kids? I have never done it but also schools may take them - especially consider programs that work with special ed?

Have your own little Aggie Bonfire.

That thing was huge; centerpole = 2 telephone poles spliced together.

Your five or six boxes of '87 Topps is a tiny drop in a huge bucket. Now if we could get the warehouse rooms full of unopened '87 material loaded onto a container ship and dumped in the Pacific ... along with about 3/4 of the already opened stuff ... then there might be a nice balance between supply and demand.
  • Have you considered giving them away to trick or treaters on Halloween? That would be a neat suprise for alot of kids.

You could also try trading the 87 boxes for something you might be interested in.
  • I think first you have to decide whether or not you want to make a few dollars on it or not. If you do, then sell the boxes or open them and sell the nice cards. If you don't care about the money then if it were me I'd do something with them myself rather than just give them to a charity. The trick or treat idea was neat and the little league game idea was cool. I mean, if you're going to give them away, might as well make sure they get used in a way that you like and that way you get to see those they were given to enjoy them.

Thanks all for your responses. I may give them to my local Boys and Girls Club. Last year, I donated 75,000 cards to them. The kids were there and they really were excited. That was really neat to see. I am leaning doing that again; it might be a thrill for them to try for packs with a Barry Bonds rookie.

    Thanks all!

You could actually make a few bucks putting them in a crappy local auction- there are people that bid on cards they know nothing about because they think they might find some hidden treasure. I say give em to the kids unopened.
