1954 Aaron auction

Does this card look anything close to a PSA 7?

54 Aaron

Check out the supersized image. The left edge looks pretty ragged and there is an odd yellow line. This would have to be on the scan to make this card a 7 but it sure looks to be on the card.

The rough cut is not a problem in grading (or to most collectors), if it's not too severe. That was the technology of the time. That yellow print line and print defects in general are pretty common with the Aaron rookie, but I'm surprised this one didn't merit a PD qualifier. When you combine that with the centering, I don't think I'd pay full SMR. In fact if I was shopping for an unqualified PSA 7 Aaron and willing to pay for it, I'd keep shopping.

The ragged edge is distracting but I think it is the centering and the yellow line that ruins that card. Can't believe it didn't get either a PD or a OC qualifier.
  • that card will likely meet or go over SMR. Aaron rookies have been selling pretty well recently. Check this auction for an aaron psa 6

Really small scan nets it close to SMR (I'm a little bitter because when i auctioned off my aaron rookie just 2 weeks before this one ended, i provided a large scan and it sold for $80 less).

There was also a PRO aaron 7.5 selling....went for over $800.

This begs the debate on grading "on a curve" - in the world of 54T's, this is not bad - yes, it could be centered a touch better for a 7 but still not bad - perhaps a PD - but people usually bid accordingly.

I received this Jennings back from PSA - was expecting a 2-3 and got a 4 - due to the staining, I thought the grade was generous but in the world of T3's, this isn't bad.

Some may be tempted to say the card was graded on a curve?
