Opinions needed on third party grading companies

This should be easy ... getting your opinions on something image

Please let's not get into the merits of holdering verses raw coins. What I would like to get a handle on is the reputations of some of the TPG companies when it comes to world coinage. On US coinage, PCGS has a great reputation as does NGC but even these two vary greatly in some areas of their grading. Overall PCGS seems to be harder on high end moderns than NGC. There are also differences in various groups of classics and in what gets bodybagged. Both of these companies also do grading of world coinage.

Some companies have extremely poor reputations (and they like to sue to protect what is left of their names). Some have so so or no reputations in US coinage but good reps on world or specific country's coinages. ICCS and Canadian coinage comes to mind.

I'm looking mostly at Canadian and Mexican stuff but opinions on the grading of other country's coinage fits in this thread just as well.

Thanks!

British - if buying: NGC, ANACS and PCGS, in about that order. If selling, probably the other way around.

How is CCCS's rep in the community? I know they are a newer company.

I personal have not deal with CCCS yet.
However, heard many Canadian dealers and collectors are pretty happy with CCCS.

  • I'm pretty staid, I like ANACS, PGCS and NGC in that order. ANACS because I've dealt with them for years and know pretty much what to expect when I send things to them. PCGS because of marketability, NGC is solid but I haven't dealt with them much. I've never certified Canadians so have not opinion there, I'm leary of ICG and ICCS simply because I haven't dealt with them at all.

PCGS has been berry berry kind to me with reguards to Gr Brit modern ... so far have managed several MS67s & 68s and one MS69. Still waiting on the results from a few other submissions.

CCCS I don't think I've run into that particular holder before. I think that brings me up to four different companies using the initials CCCS.
  • I want to thank everyone for their experiance and opinions!

That makes PCGS suspect to me ... seem to be quite liberal in their grading of British moderns ... or are you just an expert at picking out the great stuff? image

CCCS strikes me as being too new to have any sort of grading reputation at all yet. In the Canadian market ICCS is a known. Both use flips for their entombment so no difference in that arena.

Is there one company that stands out above the others in grading of Gold? of coppers? of problem coins?

LOL, looks like CCCS copied ICCS and simply changed the insert colour.

Just a matter of a good eye so far ... the better grades have been on 20 pence. Still waiting to see how I did on some of the other coins I sent in as PCGS has been harder on the 2 quid lately.

    History Geek:

Thanks for sharing the picture and I will leave this to someone else to prove me wrong, but you may well be the first to post a picture of a CCCS graded coin on the this forum and if that is the situation, congrats because you have been awarded a Darkside Post of the Day Award... and we need to update the list. This maybe 34 or 35 or higher... The concept of station identification and commerical breaks fall short under these circumstances...image so we can search for the right information.
