I think the coin would sell for around $5,000-$7,000 in a PCGS holder. The coin that did not sell was in a NGC slab. NGC slabbed Ikes seldom bring the money of PCGS Ikes (right or wrong).

Another 1972 T1 MS66 recently sold for around $10,000 but the POP on that coin is #3.

This coin has no established value. It's true value is what the current buyer is willing to pay.
The type # 1 and type # 2 are much more stable, as far as price and populations are concerned.
I would not pay a lot of money for the type # 3 because of the possibility of several more being certified in ms 66. ( Like the 1976-S In ms 68 )
Of course the seller of this coin might not agree !

Just in case anyone is curious, I don't have one, I was just doing a little fishing for #'s and info just in case I ever see one.

I saw a 72-P Type 3 PCGS MS66 at FUN this year priced at $5,500. That sounded fair,
but was out of my league.image

I do not believe there could be anything close to a "surge" in the pops <<(Like the 76-S in 68)>>
Mostly because ALL of the 76-S Silvers were encased in special Mint Sets and not intended
for circulation. Most of the 72-P's were intended for circulation (or slot machines).....In fact,
none had the luxury of being in a nice protected Mint Set. The chances of finding a significant
amount of 72-P's in MS66 is far rarer than finding 76-S's in 68....IMHO.

I'll buy every 72-P in 66 that anyone wants to sell at the levels people are talking about on this thread.

I wholeheartedly agree with Brian....very few additional 66's will be made. A few yes, but not enough to over supply demand.

Sorry gentlemen, but I have to disagree with both of you on this point. Reason : One year ago the 1971-P in MS66 had a population of 26, and it's now 34.
That's a 31 % increase in one year. The same is true for the 1973-P, and 1974-P. Their populations were 56, and 57 , only one year ago.
While it's true that the 71 and 72 coins are not coming from mint sets, they are coming from somewhere else.
I have found that many are coming from Dansco sets offered for sale
by collectors, years ago and sold or traded to dealers.
In addition, many people saved or hoarded Ikes ( that were not collectors ) at this time. They had a connection with Ike and grew up during this period, and simply saved the coins as momentos, even though they were not collectors.
At a local show, a few months back, I bought a complete dansco set that had been traded to a dealer. I received 3 Ms66 coins back from PCGS out of that Ike dansco set.!!!

The dansco sets that are offered by dealers at shows will sometimes surprise you as far as quality is concerned. Most were put together by collectors who selected the very best coins that they could find.
Another advantage is that most dealers are just now starting to realize the true value of high grade Ikes. In many cases, they haven't " cherrypicked " the Ike dansco albums, and simply sell them for the best price intact.
That's called " being asleep at the wheel ". However, I don't expect this window of opportunity to last much longer.

James, I don't think they will be going down in price. As a matter of fact, I would expect prices to continue to climb. More, and more Ike collectors are coming into the market.
Every show that I attend, I see more and more dealers selling Ikes !! Even if populations increase, there will NEVER be enough high grade Ikes to satisfy demand.
Personally, I will continue to collect and support this series. It has nowhere to go but UP !!!!!
