Karl Günther of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen
was born on Aug.07.1830 in Arnstadt.
He studied Law and Literature in Bonn, joined the Prussian Army from 1850 - 1855 and retired with the grade of a Major.
On Jun.14.1869 he married Princess Marie of Saxe-Altenburg, the marriage was issueless.
Karl Günther reign of the principalty started on Jul.17.1880.
In 1906 he was disabled in a hunting accident, due to this injury he had to stay in sickbed until he died in a sanatorium
on Mar.28.1909.
With Prince Karl Günther the line of Sondershausen expired, from that date the principalty was ruled by Prince Günther
Viktor of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt.
The coin you see below was struck for the 25. Anniversary of reign and it is the „thick rim variety“ (Jäger 169b).
For this coin they used the obverse-hub of 2 Mark 1896 (Jäger 168) and the engraver Otto Schultz worked freehand on the hub.
In doing so the laurel-twig got too plain and the rim too thin.
Therefore a new hub was made, but due to the fixed deadline 62.500 pieces were struck with the first dies
(these are the thin rim variety), the rest was struck with the new dies, mintage of only 12.500 pieces.
