Desert Storm Authenticity Question - Opinions

After rereading some of the articles on DS cards, I went over my two Ryans. The more I look at them, the more I'm beginning to think that they're fakes. The logos just seem to be the wrong colors, and the flags don't look right. I've attached some scans, and would like to hear from the peanut gallery. I found that inverting the colors makes it a lot easier to see the details.

    Jeff,
It looks OK to me. Here's the correct logo (note the nice red "x"). Relax.

Edited to say: My furshluginer website appears to be down. Heads will roll.

In case anyone else is wondering:

A real one on the left, a fake one on the right.

For me, looking at the flag is the best way to discern between the two I guess. Thanks for the opinions, and I feel a little better about mine. The main thing throwing me off was the real yellow color of the stamps, as opposed to the yellowish-chrome the real ones are.
  • Jeff,

Nice cards… You should get them graded. These cards are one of the most counterfeit cards in this set... Behind the Chipper and MAC's card! The color does have a lot to do with it, but you have the correct color.

The articles out here only talks about the size and the stars on flag. There are many other counterfeit cards out here today. You don't see to many counterfeit cards like the ones that Beckett shows in their article. Back in 1992 and 1993 is when we had a lot of those cards being sold on ebay.

I don’t put to much trust in graded DS cards anymore… I have a graded counterfeit DS card. I brought it back in the 90s from an ebay seller. It’s graded an 8!!! I believe this person got it graded before anyone really knew about the counterfeit cards. That is the only way I could think how it got past a grader.

I have been collecting these cards ever since we received them back in the first war. I also started collecting the counterfeit cards after I had to learn the hard way and brought about $300.00 worth back in 1992. I just had an ebay seller mail me a complete set of the counterfeit cards. He brought them back in 1994 thinking they were real. The main reason I collect the counterfeit cards… I mail a lot of them to other collectors so they can compare them to the real cards.

I have attached your card next to a counterfeit card that was sold on ebay. The photo is dark because that is how the seller posted the photo on ebay. He tried to hide the bright gold stamp which is a sign that it could be counterfeit.

A Nolan Ryan #1 PSA 8 sold for $150.00 the other night on ebay and the #6 went for $100.00!

A Barry Bonds PSA 10 sold for over $800.00... not bad for a 1991 card.

More counterfeit cards on my web site...

The stamp seal on the left is what we are seeing today. If you find a card and it has a seal stamp like the one on the left it's a counterfeit no matter what anyone tells you.

I think that blowing up the scans and inverting the color may be the best way to zoom in on that stamp. Too hard to tell from just the gold tone, but when the colors are so different it's a lot easier to make out details. Thanks for the input everyone.

    Look closer.....

btw, I bought them for a penny apiece (already slabbed) as the kicker for a group of cards I bought on Naxcom. Yes, I overpaid for most of those (1990 Topps Tiffany Ryan PSA 10s, 88 Fleer Glossy, etc.) but I think Karma worked its magic for that deal.
