I am shocked!

I just got my collector's club free submission grades. One of the cards I submitted, a 1970 Topps Seaver that I personally pulled from one of many unopened packs back in 1979 and that I felt had a legitimate shot at scoring a 10, came back with "Not Holdered, Evidence of Trimming". There is zero chance of this. This card was immediately placed into a protective holder 26 years ago and never removed until a week or so ago. After speaking to someone at PSA, I was told that they would pull the card before shipping it back to me and reevaluate.
Has this ever happened to anyone else and what was the end result?

  • Yes, it happens from time to time. Clearly, they error on the side of caution and if there was something a little unusual it doesn't get holdered. Often on re-examination or re-submission, it will get holdered.

It could also be small sized which would get the same response

They said it would be reexamined. Does this mean I have no realistic shot at a top grade or do you believe they can be fair about grading the card now? I must admit that of the other 55 cards of mine they graded I feel they more or less did a very good job.

4 or 5 years back, I had 10-12 cards labeled the same way. I sent them back after talking to PSA and 7 came back 9, so who knows

I have a 67 Hank Agurrie PSA 8. I guess it is not trimmed since it is in a holder, but when I hold it up with other 67s it is defenitly shorter top to bottom than my other 67s. I would say a couple of mm. I know that all cards are not the same exact size. I wonder what gives them evidence of trimming in cases where the naked eye can not tell?

happened to me once @ a show so i took the card
that was too small ( taken from an unopened vending
case i opened ) and shred it into 20 +++ pieces threw
it up in the air and i stated " well it's definitely short now! "
it was a perfect 1985 topps clemens rookie.
my point was it should have been labelled
"minimum size requirement" and i took offense to
    PSA's terminology/insinuation

Yes - happened to me once under same scenario. Has to do with how the card was cut. Don't take it personally - resubmit it and see what happens.
Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!

I hope this doesn't happen to my (10) Carews i am sending in on Monday ( see "my free 10 submssions" about 3 or 4 threads down). I have some 400 plus Carew cards i have personally collected since 1969. All of these cards are NM/MT or better. My first big submission will go in May or June covering 67' thru 81, all makes, brands, and models. My master Set is currently # 3.

    There will be no re-evaluations!
  • I am glad they err on the side of caution. If not, where would the graded hobby be?

    Mudflap,

Nice!!! Resubmit the card. You have nothing to lose.

At least eight 1968 OPC Stargell's have been submitted between three collectors, all have come back "minimum size requirements", "evidence of trimming", etc. You try to explain that this card (and others from the set) was printed shorter in size via big post-it notes, cite the pop report which indicates a 1, but this non-customer service friendly, production-like grading card company just doesn't get it.

In regard to other OPCs and Venezuelans, when I call within minutes of spotting obvious errors via the online submission status, the response is that the cards have been shipped. The answer is always, “no problem, just send them back with an explanation.” Sure, on my time, my expense, and having to write the same letter over and over. Get’s old.

SGC and GAI are much more high touch. And there’s no lame membership fee, separate submission forms, and (I’ll say it) the grading is more consistent.

Which company has graded most of my cards? Which will I continue to send most of my cards? Of course, it’s McPSA. But I can’t wait till the collector crowd wakes up.

Yes, I'm now ready to accept the consequences of my actions. My hand is ready to be slapped.

Credit where credit is due. PSA reevaluated the card. The following are my grades from my initial free club submission:

    1 12172905 1968 TOPPS 177 METS ROOKIES J.KOOSMAN/N.RYAN Not Holdered, Miscut
    2 12172906 1968 TOPPS 110 HANK AARON N/A 8
    2 12172907 1968 TOPPS 110 HANK AARON N/A 9
    3 12172908 1971 TOPPS 513 NOLAN RYAN N/A 7
    4 12172909 1970 TOPPS 712 NOLAN RYAN N/A 8
    5 12172910 1970 TOPPS 300 TOM SEAVER N/A 9

Not sure what the deal is with the Ryan rookie. Will have to check it out when it comes back.

PM sent. FWIW, I was pretty damn sure I would get two 9's but so it goes.

FWIW I'm doing a very large graded set - and we'll just suffice it to say that my submissions are not sent to California.
