Looking for some pricing/value information on a PCGS PR65 Cameo 1940 Nickel?

First, let me say that the coin is not currently for sale. It is being held for a client, to whom I want to be able to offer it at a price which is fair to each of us.

According to the on-line PCGS Population Report the coin is a pop 3, with 1 lower for the date, and 1 of only 7 Cameo's for all dates and grades in the 1938-1942 run.

Any pricing/value/sales records that anyone could provide would be much appreciated.

    Around $1200-1500

Made a 64 that subsequently upgraded to 65.

I'm guessing that in the current market, the value may be considerably higher. Stricktly speculation on my part though, I have no sales data to support my hunch.

The population figures I cited in my previous post did not include the numbers for the 1942-P issue, which shows 5 Cameo's and 1 Deep Cameo.

I would love to see that deep cam.

I own the 1940 PR65 Cam that segoja mentions. (James, don't be mad at me, but I am resubmitting to PCGS. I think it is really a PR66 Cam image) There are so few cameos, the value/pricing is tough. I wanted to collect a cameo Jeff in all the available years. The pricing went cuckoo about the time I bought the first few. The pricing was doubling on each one that came to market.

If if's a strong cameo, it is very desirable. I don't think that $2k is unreasonable as a base.

I own that one -- it's my icon coin (to the left).

There's a picture of the obverse and reverse linked to my set (BNE Collection, DCAM/CAM)

    Badger,

Not at all mad, in fact I'm always happy when coins I sell upgrade. Just shows the quality of what I sell.

This is a tough coin any way you look at it no matter who owns it or sold it!

    Thanks for the replies.

I confirmed the sale of the coin to my client today, though we had to "argue" a bit about the agreed upon price. I tried to get him to pay me $1000, he wanted to pay $1250 and we finally settled on $1125 as a compromise.image

Two 66Cam NGC's have sold for 1380, 1450. So a PCGS 65 Cam would be fair a little under this.

The price strikes me as eminently fair considering the rarity of early CAMs... and you have to admire, at any price, Barry's 42-P DCAM as the rarity it is, as well as Badger's wonderous collection of 1950-64 proofs. But then, I have never spent more than $300 on any proof Jeff, despite specializing in the series, so what do I know? Yeah, I'm cheap ... image

RGL - You're going to have to teach me how to do that - not spend over $300image and still have a collection like yours.
