A couple of suprizing things about the The Los Altos Collection of Lincoln Cents Auction

1) a couple of the more common coins didn't sell. These are $200 level coins. I guess every dollar matters even on a $100K+ set?
2) 1934-D Lincoln Cent. MS-67 RD (PCGS). Went for less then $3K. About the same price as the 36-S in the same grade. Did anyone see this coin in person? Was there a problem with it?
3) 1954 MS67RD didn't sell. Anyone know what the reserve on this was? What the high bid was?
To me, it looks like the total, was $135K with juice (with 2 low, 1 medium, 1 high, and 1 super high valued coins not selling)

Jaime - Any board member can have my 54 P in ms67 red for $75K.And I know it is the best one of all three 67 reds. You said it seemed the prices were pretty low? I will bet that there were at least a dozen auction records set for many of the dates auctioned.
SOG - I can assure you that Tim McCrone(Los Altos) made more than 100 grand on this set if it brought 135 grand. And 100K is not chopped liver.

<<Jaime - Any board member can have my 54 P in ms67 red for $75K.>> Here we go again. Be real Stewart. Besides, the reserve for the 54-P was originally $9,000. What are you guys talking about - this $80,000??? Are you on DRUGS???!!! The 1953 only has a pop of 3 also, and the reserve was much lower. ($7,000. I bid $6900 and my message was I needed to bid one increment higher to meet the reserve to be able to buy the lot).
All in All, a lot of the coins sold for less than others of the same grade not too long ago. 1935 and 1934 come to mind. Yeah, Yeah everyone can say their slabbed grade is better than another slabbed with the same grade, but I dont buy that anymore.
Still many Lincolns that are hidden away, beauties too I bet, that will push the pops up. Only a matter of time. Just telling it like it is....
for over twice what the 58P sold for. My wife's registry mint set will get a little boost.

SOG,
Interesting on the 34-D. I had bid the coin right to its reserve ($2600) about a week before the auction. Then I get an email stating that the reserve had been lowered to $2500 and that I was now the high bidder at @ $2510. They offered to let me retract the bid if I wasn't comfortable with the reserve change, but I thought "What the heck" and just left it there. I was outbid the last couple hours before internet bidding closed. I really needed that coin for my set, but decided to let it go. I'm growing weary of all the manipulation. The Mershon hype that blew up, reserves fluctuating, etc. I just didn't get the warm fuzzies with the whole deal.

Oh yeah, I forgot, I'm with Lloyd on the 54-P. No FRIGGIN way would that coin bring 80K. $10,000 would be a generous bid.
