Counterfeit Dutch 2 1/2 G?

Does anyone know if there is any counterfeiting of this denomination, from dates during the reign of Willem III? I purchased two of them, but the toning is very flat. Also, on one, an 1873, the incuse lettering around the rim is weak. The other coin is from 1858.

Yep. I've got a counterfeit 1863 2-1/2 G, so I'm sure there are more. image

Edited to add: Mine has kind of a soapy feel to it, so that might be a clue.

The 1863 is the scarcest of the series, which might explain the counterfeit. My two are quite common.
By the way, Ponterio is auctioning off an 1863. See lot 2354.
I have a bid on it. Fortunately, I have a lot of faith in the Ponterio firm.

  • I am only a few coins away from completing my Rijksdaalder set 1898 - 2001. I have a beautiful 1870 piece but I'm not sure if I want to collect 1840 - 1874 although, as mentioned the only possible 'stopper' is the 1863 piece.

    Most counterfeits occur as follows:

    1898
    1929
    1932 ( rough hair ) from 1933 piece
    1938 ( rough hair ) also from 1933 piece
    1940

Hope this helps if anyone does indeed still collect rijksdaalders. image
