Your first loves are always memorable
I built a Peace $ collection a long time ago, sold it off, and when my son wanted to do a Registry Set -- with my help -- I said, "Why don't we do Peace $". We're now half way through it.
Is this what you mean
I sold my Two Cent set 18 months ago, along with some dupes. I still haven't gotten over it. It's a very small set, only 9 coins in the basic set, but it took my 12 years to complete.
I only have 2 (high grade) dupes left, an MS66RD I'm keeping for my type sets and an 1872 in MS65RD that's in the process of being sold. If a nice Two Cent comes to market, I still look at it out of habit, like I would any other coin.
As a "collector" it was difficult for me to sell. What helped convince me was that fact some of the pieces had been off the market for 12 years. Selling the set gave someone else a chance to enjoy them like I did, and I did enjoy them!! Perhaps that's the difference between a "collector" and an "investor".
The pain will lessen Bruce, give it time.
I sold my Registry Set of Lincolns a while back, and have no regrets. I still look at them, though, and collect some varieties. Hard to give them up altogether!
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
I just love the way roosevelt dimes tone and had a ball hunting down great coins and submitting
for upgrades. I then sold my set intact and for several months after found myself doing just what
you are doing. Then I would hear of someone who snagged a nice Roosie and I would be pissed
that I missed it, even though I didn't have my set anymore. The cure.... Build yourself another set
in the series you most enjoyed. I found that there are some very nice coins in the under grades.
I'm now having a ball again with the Roosies. The best part is that I'm not so entrenched with
having "the number 1 set" That I just look for nice coins that I like and its nice to pass on dups
that I run across to other collectors. More Roosies go through my hands now then when I had
my set and I'm having far more fun now with my favorite series then when I had my set.
Bruce, There's a whole lot of nice Barbers out there and with your eye and knowledge I'm sure
you can figure out how to have a great time with them. Look what "Joshua" did after he sold
off his number 1 MS Merc set.
Good Luck and have fun with what ever you do.
Nick
If I had it my way, stupidity would be painful!
I have done the same... build wonderful sets, sold and then moved on to new challenge. I have a much broader knowledge base now by collecting different series and wouldn't change a thing. What will your next challenge be?
Pat
After reading this thread I doubt I will EVER sell my sets!
My $10 Indian Gold Registry Set
$20 Saint Gaudens Registry Set
Old habits never die ! Why did you sell your coins in the first place? In todays market it is difficult to do what you did with 3 cent nickels and proof walkers.I say it is almost impossible.....unless you want to collect modern $hit.
I would suggest just collecting "coins" that really turn you on along with ART and other collectibles.
