The thing that would make me pause is his selling history. I didn't take time to check them all, but his last 10 sales had nothing to do with vintage cards, mostly old video games and magazines, nothing more than $10.

From Pac-Man to a 1934 Gehrig PSA 8? Possible, I suppose. But I'd be concerned about a small-time seller's account being hijacked for the big heist. I'd insist on a photo of the card in his hand in front of today's local paper. And then I'd insist on using Escrow.com for that kind of money.

  • I have no probs with it. If I see paypal, I have protection through them. If I get an empty envelope, I call visa and it takes a little while longer to get my money back.

Now this is too weird. That '51 Mantle PSA 8 (oc) ... it once belonged to me. I still have the cert. # in my records, and the small wax stain on the back is in the exact same spot. I sold it on eBay about a year ago. I know who I sold it to, and I know who HE sold it to, but I lost track after that. The wording of the description is changed slightly but it's essentially what I wrote, the way I wrote it, when I was selling it. I remember this very well, because I have regretted selling it ever since.

So I'm more skeptical, not less. From $5 video games to high-grade '34 Gehrig and '51 Mantle rookie? Both with bizarrely low starting bids? This may be legit, but it sure a thing that makes me go hmmmmmm.

In a situation such as this, unless I am able to inspect and pickup the card in person, I ain't bidding.
  • deals can be made in such instances. Pay only if you can recover your funds.

  • JRDolan - I think your message is the one that completely convinces me to stay away from this. It may go for a good price, but its going to be an incredible hassle that will probably end up in tears.

Once again - excellent snoop work on this item. The auction looks fine at first glance - sober description of a great card, nice scan, 100% feedback, etc. 2nd glance shows a 3 day auction for a high dollar card that any seller would want to keep on the boards for a while for maximum exposure. Then you see the guy basically sells automotive gear. Finally the '51 Mantle is discovered - this auction is not what it seems to be. Good work guys.image

Edited to add: I wouldn't trust that paypal's investigation policies would protect my money. This scam looks pretty sophisticated; I would have to believe that if they are offering paypal, it's because they are confident that they can prove they sent out the item with delivery confirmation and maybe a picture of a hand putting what looks like the card into an envelope, followed by an aerial view of the mail truck with an insert xray photo showing the card inside the envelope.

GMONEY what you say is true but I wouldn't give the guy the chance to get any money. What happens is this guy cleans his account out the moment you pay and vanishes. Sure you can get your money back from VISA but PAYPAL will be the one who get's stiffed. They lose money and raise everybodies fees and we all lose. If the auction stinks I'd stay away otherwise the scammer gets paid off for the scam.
  • I've contacted the guy.
He quoted me a fixed price on the card. I told him I'd meet him in Ohio to pay with cash. He says he's in Europe, no longer in the States.

    FRAUD
  • I think this is what happens when someone falls into the trap of ebay email-phishing. I'll bet the real person behind that userid is an honest fellow out in Ohio...but he actually put in his password in one of those fake "ebay account closing" emails.
