New One Shekel Error Coin From Israel

Does anyone have the newly found Israel Error Coin? Any thoughts on it? I just picked one
up at a show for $65...but I bet that is no longer his price. I
definitely overpaid on the bullion price of this tiny speck of gold,
but am happy to have it. In the "smallest gold coin" version of the
Jacob and Rachel Coin which sold for $65, the letter corresponding to
the "e" in the word Israel was missing in the Arabic inscription.

Here are two links to the coin.....

  • That is actually the error one.....

Israel is spelled incorrectly in Arabic. This is what happens when you have your coins minted in Europe.

The corrected issue has not been distributed yet, but they have stopped the sale of the error coin.
It is estimated that only 550 of them were sold by the ISRAELI MINT and you may now order the corrected version.

  • Other coins of the same design in the series do not have the same error....it is the sheer size of this coin that enabled it to get by the die inspections prior to minting. I am happy they caught the error relatively early in the distribution process. They minted 20,000 of them and over 95% of them are to be melted.

The IGCMC offers some beautiful coins and medals. They are usually expensive, but I look at the markup at it as a donation to the Israeli Government and the holyland. They can definitely use the funds as they fight their own war on Terror.

    It's certainly a beautiful piece!

At 13.92 mm, it's hardly the smallest gold coin in the world. Perhaps they're talking about coins produced at the moment? I have a 1/32 ducat measuring less than 5 mm in diameter and weighing in at 0.10 grams.

  • Here is some updated information on this one....and some more scans....

I found the following at the Centre of Israeli Numismatics Specialties website. http://isracoins.com/P49.htm

JACOB AND RACHEL - ISRAEL'S ERROR COIN OF THE DECADE ?

The Bank of Israel recently issued, through the Israel Government Coins & Medals Corporation, a 1 NIS 'Jacob and Rachel' 2004/5764 gold coin, part of an international 'smallest gold coin' series.

Shortly after initial distribution of a very limited quantity, a serious error was discovered by a keen-eyed, Arabic reading collector. The Arabic letter A from the word ISRA'IL (Israel) was omitted, apparently by the engraver!
A blunder that had to be put straight without delay...

The IGCMC immediately instructed the Royal Netherlands Mint in Utrecht to halt production, interrupted all sales, recalled all error coins from its stores and franchise outlets, and instructed the Dutch mint to prepare a restrike without the error.
Unofficial reports from the IGCMC put the estimated quantity of error coins that made their way to the - mainly local Israeli - collectors' market, at 650 - 680 error coins only (unconfirmed).
