1960 Topps Wax pack break- final results....

Over the past few months I've been posting results of various different 70s and 80s box/case breaks, and I figured I'd throw in this one for sh*ts-n-giggles. A while back I bought an ungraded 1960 Topps 2nd series wax pack (possible Yaz RC) for $230 delivered. I was planning on having it graded if authentic, and returning for a refund if not (the seller and I had an agreement). As I was inspecting the pack the glue came undone, and I was forced to open the pack. I ended up pulling a nice Mantle/Boyer Rival All Stars card (The only other card in the series besides Yaz that would have made it worth opening). I sent it in to PSA and got a 9 NQ to my delight. I was expecting a 9 OC or an 8, but I guess the grader was having a good day. Here's how I did overall:

Initial cost: $230

Grading: $0 (used my 6 free submissions)

Sales: Mantle/Boyer- $840
Wrapper- $70
Indians Team PSA 9OC- $12

Total profit/loss: +$692

This is by far the best I've done with anything I've opened, I only wish I had something to put in my collection from the break. If it was the Yaz RC there's no way I would've sold it, but since I feel everybody who has ever put on a Yankees uniform is the devil, I had no problems letting it go. Hopefully I can continue this good luck with my next purchase. Any suggestions as to what I should go for?

  • Lee,

Great news and congratulations. It seems like every time I come upon the top card in a set the card either has a stick of gum attached, woefully OC, or the only card in the pack dinged. Maybe I'm exagerating a little. I suppose I tend to remember the could have beens more rather than the really nice ones I've uncovered. I have gotten the only PSA 10s for the Fred Couples and Mark O'Meara rookie cards. image

Thanks for sharing and good luck with your next adventure.

  • wow--good job! did u sell the mantle/boyer on ebay? if so, i'd like to see the scan--what is your ebay user id? the smr on that card is 1200, as i'm sure u're aware, so the buyer got a great card at a great price, but u made a nice--make that really nice--profit, not that i need to tell u! and i agree with u regarding your sentiments towards the yankees--i myself am a diehard red sox fan--let the games begin! as for what u should go for next, how about looking at some of the great unopened packs alan rosen is offering in conjunction with eac gallery on ebay--this wed and thursday. (how many cards were in the pack?)

I did great on a 1960's cello I opened a few years ago,
so I bought a few vintage wax packs and busted them but they didn't pan out.

What you're really doing is gambling when you open old stuff,
and the odds are highly stacked against you. Sure is fun though. Congrats !

  • Now this alone makes up for your losses thus far!! Awesome. One thing that gets me thinking is... Are PSA 9 cards form the 60s selling for 30% under SMR as this one did? Or is this atypical? I think you should continue with going for the packs that are as old as you can afford. This one was a beauty!!

god I love that your doing this!!

    Here's a link to the auction: Mantle/Boyer

The funny thing is I didn't even mean to open the pack, yet this is the best I've done with anything I've opened since I started this craziness. I was actually planning on getting the pack graded and reselling, using the profits to buy some other unopened pack/box/case. As far as the sale price, this particular card is not all that hard to find in good shape (32 PSA 9 NQ in pop. I think), and I think most of the die hard Mantle fans and high grade set collectors have one by now. In fact, one of the guys on this forum asked what I wanted for it and I told him I expected $800-1000 for it on ebay based on how many had sold over the last 60 days. I think 1960 in particular is a year that a decent amount of unopened product has surfaced over the last decade; I could be wrong but it seems that way. I just wish I actually wanted to keep something that came out of the pack. I guess I'll just have to blow the winnings on some other hopeless box break.

OK, I don't mind being the guinea pig. I really do believe that if you select your purchases maticulously (moreso than I am), over time you can make a profit, or at least not pay that much for some really great cards (which is my goal). I think the key would be to keep hammering a product that proves to be a little profitable. I suspect 1987 Donruss rack and 1986 Topps rack cases are- They're fairly cheap and all you need is one or two Gem Mint goodies and you're set. The problem is that it's the fun stuff to open that commands the premium, and tends not to pan out usually. Damn supply and demand. I'll give random updates every now and then as to how I'm doing overall. Right now, it's too early to tell because I have a bunch of stuff at PSA, but I do know it's a whole lot better than I was a week ago.

    Lee
  • Atleast when your opening vintage stuff your guaranteed to find interest in every NMT-MT card, unlike 99+% of those 87 donruss or 86 topps that you'll probably have to throw away to get rid of.

Keep em coming, and good luck!

Lee - did you buy the 1960 wax pack on eBay from MAINSTREET or MAIN STREET CARDS (or something like that)??? Your experience sounds very familiar. I purchased an ungraded 1960 series 2 wax pack on eBay a few months ago for $260. I remember checking the seller's feedback and seeing that they had already sold a few series 2 1960 packs and I needed one for my wax pack collection. I was amazed at the condition when I received it. It was perfect - glossy, no wear what so ever on the corners and (what looked like) a nice seal on the back. When I removed the pack from the team bag that it was stored in, I noticed that the seal was opened. I thought about returning it but curiosity got the best of me and I took a peek. The center card was the Yaz rookie. It appears to be close to the condition of your Mantle/Boyer (has a few print spots). If you did buy from MAINSTREET or MAIN STREET or whatever, WHAT"S WITH THIS GUY???? Selling searched packs but leaving high grade examples of the best cards? What gives?

Sure hope these aren't shills posting here hoping we swarm in on these auctions - maybe trying to set us up for the kill. If you're not shills - my apologies.

Wow - does he have any more searched packs with Yaz rookies in them? image

Maybe they weren't "searched", but because of the age of the packs, the seals were loose. I don't know this for certain - it would seem that 1960 packs are quite tough to find in the first place these days...

    Ice9,
His id is main404. Clearly the packs were not searched. They were probably stored in a very dry environment and the glue just dried out. The cards were clearly untouched by human hands as all of mine had very sharp corners and perfect gloss; centering was the only issue. I asked if he had any more and I would've bought as many as he had, but he said he sent the rest to get graded. Guess he wised up. Let me know if you want me to take that Yaz RC off your hands.

This kind of shilling stuff has been done here before in this forum. I already offered my apologies if I'm incorrect. Doesn't seem logical a guy with 1800 feedback, selling lots of cards, could make an error such as this and give money away. I've seen a number of large feedback ebayers suddenly become scammers, come in for the kill, and burn lots of people. So it isn't "way off" like you thought. I hope you learned something.

Whoa guys, don't make me separate you two. No offense taken stevek. It seems like this guy has been clearing out an old card shop. His starting prices are so way off on some things, it seems he's completely out of touch with what's going on in the hobby ($14.95 for an 88 Fleer baseball cello pack, etc...). Basically, ice9 and I lucked out with the 1960 packs, but I'm sure this guy has some other good stuff hidden away, but he was non-responsive when I emailed for a list of things he had for sale.

I'm trying to post a scan of the Yaz rookie, but I'm getting a message that indicates the file is too large to attach.

    Two questions:

Is there any way around the file size limitation?

    and (most importantly)

How do you guys put a picture into the text of a message without attaching a file to the message?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Mike

Here is a scan of the Yaz rookie that I pulled from the series 2 wax pack.

I didn't realize what a pain in the a** it was to post scans. I read & post to the board from work and all image hosting sites are blocked by our firewall. I resized the scan file so that it was under 50kb and attached it.

I mostly read the boards and I guess that I took for granted the pictures that everyone posts from day to day. I really enjoyed the "My First Wax Pack" thead. Anyway...

Lee, the Yaz card will not pull a 9 like your Mantle/Boyer (although I think you did catch a break on the centering). It does have some print spots, but so does this one and the L / R centering is off. Is this worth getting graded? Does it have a shot at an 8 (like the one above)?

It's centered almost exactly like the Mantle/Boyer- I agree that I got a break on centering, but the fact the card doesn't have a border worked in my favor. Tough to gauge centering when you really don't have anything to measure. I can't tell about the top left corner, but if it's sharp, I think your card is a solid 8. For a card that's usually plagued with print spots, yours is relatively clean. Beautiful card, and I'd be willing to give up a pretty good amount in trade if you ever decide to let it go.

Interestingly I bought a 1960 topps wax pack a few years back...and there WAS a YAZ rookie in it.
It had tons of print spots like a lot of cards from that year, but I did get about 200 bucks for it.
And the guy who bought it submitted it and got an 8.

and now you know the rest ..............................................of the story.
