GOETZ: K 286 Folksong Book Censor 1921

K-286 FOLKSONG BOOK CENSOR (Volksliederbuchzensur), 1921,Cast AE, 61.7mm, Wt.87.9g, UNC.

On the occasion of the removal of the patriotic songs from German songbooks.

Obverse: Inscription: The German folk song book.” Clemenceau is pictured as an almost reptilian and hunchbacked elf tearing pages from a book of folk tunes. On the floor lay several song sheets such as “Rise from the Ground”, “O’ Strassburg,” and other songs about the Rhine.

Reverse: Inscription “Bone softening” and on the ribbon, “Giddiness for the International.” 1921 in exergue. The European bull wearing a Socialist Democratic balloon cap dances to the tune of the “International”.

It is interesting to note that neither of the two available sources for descriptions on this medal mentions the obvious castration of the bull. You don’t even have to look closely to see the bull’s ‘package’ sitting on the floor under it’s lifted leg. Even a droplet of blood can be seen dripping just above it. I think Goetz was saying that the Social Democrats had no testicles…vulgar and to the point…Goetz at his best.
