Grading Question

Do not know if this has been asked before, but is there a certain cutoff year that you would not have your cards graded. Just based on regular cards (stars or commons) from regular sets, not talking about insert cards. I do not see the reason to have cards from the 1980's graded, ecspecially commons.

Grading is like crack, some people get addicted.

There really is no good reason to get 80's commons graded unless you're nutty enough to want to build a high grade set for a registry. The registry can do weird things to people.

Heck, in my opinion, it's barely worth getting most 1972 and later commons graded unless they are absolutely prestine. A person who builds a complete graded set from 1972 and on will likely never recoup the costs of the grading if they submit the majority of the cards themselves. Even with a $5 special, it'll cost over $3K to have a set of 600+ cards graded. Assuming they average a PSA 8 on the grades, there is no way the set will sell for enough to recover the cost of grading as well as the value of the cards.
  • I don't think grading modern stuff is all that crazy. You can usually pick up many graded cards cheaper than what you could get them graded for. In my opinion this is a good buying opportunity. I always thought you should buy low, sell high.

Vintage is already so high, how much higher can it go? Modern can't go any lower, has no where to go but up or stay the same.

I agree. I think everyone here would have put a 51 set together in Gem condition if we knew then what we know now.

So why not build that sweet 81 set while wax and vending is still around? The 80's stuff will eventually dry up and value will climb.

Will stuff from the 1980's dry up or not? Did collector start keeping that stuff unopend and waiting to start breaking it open when some cards become valuable, therefore flooding the market. Just a thought.

I saw dealers buying 89 donruss wax for 5 bucks a box, bustin it, and trying to get griffey PSA 10's for resale. I guess for 5 bucks a box it is worth it.

I look at what a whole set is listed at, ie Beckett, PSA , doesn't really matter.
Seems like Topps price start bottoming out mid 70s so personally don't collect
after 1974 other than a few oddballs.

1967and 1973 Topps baseball wantlists (any condition) welcome. Once had the #14 ATF 1967 set. Yet another collector like skylaneflyer, gimel1 who made it to the completion of 1967 only to need the money more than the company of 609 close friends.
Looking for oddball Norm Cash and Cleon Jones stuff, and 1956 team cards
