The Hardest Card to Find

Just was wondering for those building a PSA set, what one particular card from what particular year did you find the hardest to locate. I am starting a 1967 set and have read numerous messages and other items stating that certain cards are hard to located in high grade.

I can tell you that for 1967, I had a hard time finding the following cards:

    020 Cepeda
    149 Moeller
    196 Romano
    421 Maxvill
    454 Marichal CL
    470 Shaw
    485 McCarver

There are a few others that were tough to find but these last 7 were notable. I am not sure what the population of each card is. I am basing this solely on my experience.

Thanks Softparade. What I noticed is that a few of these cards are Cardinals which has a lot of team collectors going after them as well. The Cepeda went $250+.

1968-69 OPC Hockey Mike Walton #132 PSA 8

    Impossible!
  • I'm building the 1952 Parkhurst hockey set. Preferably in PSA 8 but also PSA 7. Minus the star cards i would say any common card or semi star card. There is not much graded out there in PSA 7 let alone PSA 8. You don't find much at card shows either. Dealers are starting to want double book or more for even the commons. I find this set alot harder then the more desirable 51 set. People collect the 51 set because it has the most rookies in it. I like the 52 set better then the 51 because it is alot more colourful.
I think you will find that the common cards are harder to come by then the star cards in any set. Mainly because there are more out there. Most people who saved the cards only saved the top rookie cards or star cards, unfortunely the discarded the rest.

  • I own 3 '67 topps cards in PSA 8, they are Yaz, Aaron, and Kaline. Make me an offer on all 3...

Another thread mentioned there's a 1962 common which has only 1 PSA 8 and no 9s.

  • Royal Stars of Hockey. 8 card set from 1952 on the back of pudding boxes.
I have searched on ebay for over 7 years, seen only 7 cards from this set.
A rough Howe went for about $4,000 2 years ago. Neat cards though.

Also in Hockey that are extremely tough ...

1955 Quaker Oats Hockey Lumley, Richard, Clancy

1954 Topps Hockey #45 Tony Leswick

So does anyone know who owns a '72 Ven Carew, a Ryan? I have the Yaz, but haven't seen any star offered for quite sometime. I'm not technologically literate enough to know why the scan displays so big.

Every year always has a few
  • image

For Kaline, one that is not that expensive (Or so it seems!)

1974 OPC Kaline comes to mind, discounting all the Venezuelans, of course!

I have not seen a better than 80/20 1968 OPC #2 Leader card with Yaz,
Kaline and Frank Robinson! Another very tough one!

Great point about the '68 OPC #2. I just submitted the rest of my set for 100% completion, but that Yaz leader was tough to find. Mine will probably grade a 6. I do have a mint Kaline '74 OPC, but I'll need to check if it's OC.
