Handling of variations - how to complain?

I sent a bunch of 1967 topps baseball variations in for grading.

The way the insert cards were prepared varied wildly. (Variations in the variations I suppose)

At what point do you just send in to "re-holder" and when do you complain to the big boss
about your disappointment?

First the very good: a "history making" grading, as I got them to acknowledge the variation
of #62 the first series checklist - where the @TCG appears under the "r" in Tribe Thumpers
instead of under the "T".
How they show the variation on the insert card
The "@" under "r" in Tribe

Then, the fairly ordinary, pretty much as expected: #402 Phillies Rookie "Incomplete Line" is shown on the insert and it is accurate. Same comment for Paul Schaal and the green bat.

Then the variations that aren't noted, like 427 Ruben Gomez. I indicated on the submission form
"incomplete stats line"; you see from the Group scan - back of cards that the stats line is incomplete (the
totals are missing) but the Inserts
don't indicate the variation.

Same problem for the Bob Bruce card, it is an instance of "RBAVES" on the back, it, like the Gomez,
is a variation that PSA already recognizes, it is indicated on the submission form, but not on
the insert card.

If you are one who follows pop counts seriously they are compromising your data by
listing pops WRONG.

In the past I've gotten cards back where they show the WRONG instance of the
variation.

I mean WTF...now I have to send them all back in to get the variations indicated properly.
Joe Orlando, why can't your people just get it right the first time????

  • I am considering doing the same kind of thing for the 1971 Topps set in hopes of getting a Master Set added to the registry. Your experience in this arena doesn't give me a lot of confidence in them getting it right if I try it. Please post what you find out in the future here on the board so we can use your experience as a learning experience. From what I have observed, PSA is very inconsistent with regard to labeling variations correctly. They should be able to recognize them without you telling them, but they do not seem to in most cases.

Good luck with getting the corrections made. IMO, PSA should treat them as "Mechanical Errors" and correct them without any charge to you. You shouldn't have to pay to have the cards reholdered. It is a real pain that you have to send them back again.

  • I feel the pain, but in a smaller way.

I have had to send in several graded 1981 Fleer Steve Carltons (#6, #660), which both have variations. Most of these cards that are graded don't have any variation listed and becomes a real pain when you have to email the seller and guide them through the variations to see what they really have for sale. Now, these variations have been around since before PSA started up, and should have been noted from day one. PSA does try to help out once you work with them on the issue, but it is still a mess. Also, I hate having to pay the shipping charges all over again for cards that are already graded...

As for submissions and not getting the variation right, I think there may be a flaw in their process somehow. I just submitted a 1985 Topps Carlton mini, and noted it on the form. I kept checking the site for the posted grades and when they did , it was not a mini! So, I called them the next day, and they had to pull my box from being shipped out. It took a minute to get the Customer Care Agent to understand what I was meant by 'mini', but he understood and had them make the change and still got my box out that day. They need to look at the point where what is on the form is changed/missed.

As for the population report, I only use it for general reference. Not only do the variations create false numbers, but I have seen where the numbers just are not correct. There are cards in the 1967 OPC Pop report that have a card graded, but it does show what the grade was!

    My 2 cents...
    Always looking for 1967 OPC's.
