PCGS Pops in the '45-'58 Lincoln Wheats

There is only one MS68 in the '45-'58 Lincoln wheats (it's a '55-S). I'm willing to bet that there will never be another 68RD graded by PCGS in this date range. Not that they don't exist, but just that PCGS will never give the 68 grade for any of these. Maybe it's their grading guarantee, or their reluctance to "expand the pop envelope" or whatever...

I've seen many 67RD's in this date range, and own several. Why they can't be 68's is beyond me! I repeat my claim, there won't be any more of the 68's in this range - the best will go 67RD. Why?????

I think you have already answered this. This is similar to the recent discussion of the 1400+ MS68 1995 DDO's but 0 MS69's. Hard to believe that a few are not better than the rest.

  • dbldie55 - Thanks! - Exactly my point, though I'm not trying to "split hairs" on the grading scale - it's more like, "How can there not be ANY 68RD's out there?"

Are the graders given orders not to grade a given date range MS68RD? If they run into an MS68RD Lincoln in that date range, are they forced to grade it lower?

67's are hard in this range. You have to have a 67 + bingo, so the odds are low. To say there will never be one, well I think there is still a chance.

No, that would be the job of the finalizer.

Mike, I agree with you but would bet you could never get a straight answer. Ask Stewart, I am sure he could give a colorful explanation.

  • clackamas - You're very right! 67's are extremely tough in this range. My point goes further, though. Can you, as a Lincoln "Wheat Head," see another 68RD here? I know you've searched the OBW rolls in this date range, as have I and many, many others. So where are the 68's?

I've submitted many of these that I was convinced were lock 67's and mayby 68's. Results? - A whole lot of 66's and a few 67's.

I'll restate my initial point: I'll bet that there are no 68's forthcoming from PCGS is this date range.

One of the most recently made ms68 Lincolns was 44-d, so pcgs was willing to give the grade. I bet a 45-s will someday make it. It would be hard to imagine any other date though in that range (54-s maybe?).
  • haletj - Perfect! The '54-S - I had 4 OBW rolls of these that I cracked - two rolls had been poorly stored and the coins were spotted/hazy. The third roll was a late die state, I believe because the obverse strike was full but "mushy." The fourth roll was very nice! There were 5 that were striking! Strong strikes, nice planchets, no bagmarks, nice cartwheel, and great eye appeal! I submitted 4 of the 5 from that roll. Results: 4 66RDs.

I continue to maintain my original position in this thread: There will be no 68RD's in this date range.

I'm also willing to bet that there will never be another early Wheat graded as MS69, like Stewart's.

Does anyone know when the last 8 was made in this range? I know a couple of guys keep stats by month.

    Mike,

You send the coin that truly deserves the grade and we'll give the grade.

The 1944-58 Lincolns were pretty shabily made. They just don't look like a 34-P or 39-P. I think the most likely candidates for a 68, or even a 69, are the 1944 to 1949 S-Mints...or maybe another 55-S as so many were saved (the "last" year for S-mints, or so we thought at the time.)

Send the right coin and you'll get the grade.
