I rarely do pawn shops, but this one is a little out of the way and I just happened to be in the neighborhood. "You got any coins?" I asked. After pulling out a few of the usual common date Morgans and Peace Dollars, he lays out a few 2 X 2's that he says he just got in a few days ago. I bought all 5. Included was an 1834 Capped Bust 25c in VF+, an 1838 Capped Bust Half in XF45+, an 1875S 20cent piece in VF, an 1856 Seated Lib 25C in VF and the following 1857 Flying Eagle Cent. What do you think??

The 1857 Fleagle looks cleaned to me with XF-45 to AU-50 details. But hopefully that was more than reflected in the price!

looks like a decent AU possibly up to AU55.

Except the pawn shops in Marty's area where they sell rolls of circulated Morgans for $160 that have VF35 1893-S's in them.

I can say it looks cleaned because IMO, it DOES look cleaned with that particular image. It looks dull, washed out and mostly devoid of luster. Maybe a better picture would convince me otherwise. But with *that picture* it LOOKS cleaned because of the washed-out, somewhat lifeless appearance.

I hope I'm wrong.

[Edited to add: Ah, I read a little lower into the thread -- a scanner picture. That explains it. $50 for the bunch is a major rip -- that's about what the FE cent would be worth *by itself* if it WERE cleaned. Nice score! Maybe I ought to go to pawn shops more often.]
