Dealer's junk boxes

While I enjoy looking through them from time to time I have yet to find any goodies nowadays. Used to be I could find some decent coins but not anymore. Everything is scoured so thoughouly it seems futile to find good deals anymore.

I too love to go through these boxes. I haven't had much luck with US coins in these, but I come up with some great finds in the foreign coin junk boxes. I have one dealer in particular that doesnt deal with foreign coins and just throws every foreign coin he finds or gets through trades and sales into large pails. He doesn't even state that he has them unless you really pester him to look at them. I've developed a nice relationship with him and he now lets me dump them out and go through them to my hearts content. He has a flat rate of 5 foreign coins for a dollar, which is great for me cause I pull out all the silver coins I can, plus anything that I know to be of value. He knows that I am doing this, but he doesn't want to go through the effort of organizing and categorizing all of the coins, and just prefers to keep them in the pails.
my best find so far was a Silver Florin from Australia that is in really good shape image

Anyone else find this sort of situation?

I was preening through a foreign coin box and I found four Philippines coins. (From when they were US)

I spent a dollar for the four coins.

Junkbox cherrypicking on the Darkside has always yielded far more than on the Liteside. image

  • the US type coin junk box may be a thing of the past (save for mega-culls like coins with 2 holes thru them), but man, the 80's thru the
mid-90's (when i was doing my searching): draped and classic head large cents, draped and classic head half cents, high grade seated
half dimed thru halves w/only slight problems; bust half dimes and dimes, decent 2c and 3c coins, REALLY nice coronet and braided hair large cents.........i'm getting misty-eyed

Around 15 years ago my thumbing through a countertop junque box got me a Nova Eborac for twenty-five cents.

Perhaps you just need some fresh junk boxes.

I collect a lot of different stuff and all of it by die variety so there's almost always something
for me unless I've been through it before. But boxes which I haven't seen before can get very
picked over after enough collectors have been through them.

There has been some trend in the last twenty years to less valuable junk going into them but
this mostly applies to tokens and medals. The trend may be caused by increasingly easy access
to information and the relative ease of selling even the most esoteric of items now days.

That's true... I suppose if one is into die varieties, there's always cherries to be picked. I know somebody could certainly cherrypick my entire inventory (and they have!), because I'm not into die varieties that much (unless they're really obvious).

And exonumia always offers some interesting possibilities.
