State Quarters and the market. Advice Needed. When to sell?

p8ntp8nt Posts: 2,947 ✭✭✭
I have a bunch of AU and BU state quarters that I have kept out of my pocket change for a couple years and received from the bank. Will they ever be worth more than face if so many people are saving BU rolls and with hige mintage figures? Should I keep them? Also, I have a mint sealed $25. New York P bag, do you think these will these gain value?

Basically, if you had this stuff when would you let it go?

  • With the amount of coins the Mint is putting out of these things, I don't see any real appreciation of value in my lifetime. I'm collecting these for my kids and grandkids.

There is where I think the true value lies.

Loanshark, that is really cool what you are doing for them. I remember when I was 13 my dad gave me my most precious coin ever. A 1921 Morgan that my great grandma left for me. Nothing valuable, just special.

On the other hand, being a mere 15 I dont plan on having kids or grand kids for a while image
  • Put together a full set of SHQs in the highest grades you can find. Get PCGS if possible. I realize that at 15 this is no easy task, but mark my words: It'll be worth it. People talk a lot of smack on so called "modern crap," but when the SHQ program ends in 2008 you will see an increase in the value of these coins - especially high grade PCGS examples.

Sellsatan, that is why I am considering selling the raw circulated ones.. Im creating a MS67 PCGS set and am running low on money. I still would like to get peoples opinions on whether I should get rid of the circulated quarters to fund the certified ones or if the circulated quarters will be worth comething someday..

I would not only spend the circulated ones but all the unattractive unc. Check everything
to be sure there aren't any varieties, errors, rotations, etc, and simply spend them. There
will be some nice attractive uncs and these are worth holding onto at least for the short term.

  • I'd keep that sealed bag for a while yet.
