Proof Like double eagle population?

Can anyone guess how many PL Liberty double eagles on average are made out of the total mintage figures of a typical date?
If I were to make a guess it would be about 2%, let say if a particular date 1894s has a total mintage of 1 million there will be just 2,000 that are PL. Do you think this is pretty close or do you think it far more variable than this?

Depends on the date/mintmark. Some dates come very easy in PL (1904), but some dates are very rare or unknown in PL, like the earlier dates.

Also, double eagles aren't collected in PL like Morgan Dollars.

  • I dont know but I sure seen several recent Heritage auctions via ebay were PL examples sold for double to several times its market value compared to normal strike except for 1904 PL which saw relatively little change from the normal ones. Looks like investors and collectors are pushing this area of the market and they rightly should, hopefully they will have a PL price guide in the near future?
