I've been collecting coins since my grandfather gave me a dime folder (the kind people used to "save" money in) from Columbia Savings Bank. It was full of Mercury dimes and Roosevelts. I was 9 and seeing dates from the 1920's, 30's and 40's excited me. I couldn't believe that there were things out there so old. In it he wrote..."Remember at times your Grandfather Bob". That was 1978... He died the next year.
Now I'm 35. (Tears are rolling down my cheeks right now). I miss him and coin collecting always reminds me of him. Its almost like he knew his time was short. My collection is modern and modest, but I enjoy it. And mostly I remember Grandpa and the time I blasted the air horn on his boat. He was startled, but he never even got mad.
So, now I 'm saving four extra sets of Washington State Quarters for "my" grandchildren. Its my way of passing on his legacy... a terrific hobby no matter how big or small.
