With and without the lampshade...

Here are some comparison photos of coins taken with and without the lampshade...these are MS coins, not proofs. The lampshade seems to capture the toning better, but does not accurately capture luster or marks on the coins...so the coins look a bit better than they really are. Definitely could be used to take advantage of someone. This power must not fall into the wrong hands!

This is without the shade: (very accurate to how the coin looks in hand)

  • I think the lampshade technique works better for cameo coins.

  • I dont like the lampshade. Especially for the cameo coins. I want a picture to show me what the coin is going to look like under normal lighting, being held in my hand. It is obvious to anyone who has seen a lot of cameo coins in person, under normal lighting, that the lampshade photo coins do not look normal. Nor do the Morgan dollars, in my opinion.
    In an insane society, a sane person will appear to be insane.
