Need help identifying 1852 large cent

This is the last Coin in what was a large collection of a friend of mine. He sold off his collection many years ago but held onto this one because he could never get an answer to what the small "o" at the top represents. Only background on this coin is that he purchased it at a yard sale in the late 70's.
Over the years collectors and dealers really didn't have much of an idea what to tell him other than to send it off to get graded and checked out. Well before I hop in the car and drive 3 hours to a dealer that can ship it I thought I would see if anyone could offer any input..
Thx much,
Rob

I've never seen anything like that. You might want to send an email to Tom Reynolds... link here... to see what he thinks of the picture. This is a link to his website with the email address on the home page.

It appears someone glued a small "O" on the coin. But who knows?

  • Classic beginnings of a drill hole.
  • Thanks Dan and the rest...I'm going to shoot off a Pic to Tom Reynolds if I can get a better picture of it that is..The marking is the same height as the stars and I know is not glued on (unless the stars are too) and as for a drilling mark I've spent 15 mins now looking at it under a loop and know that can't be the case.. Maybe a punch could make that mark I'm thinking now..but that doesn't quite fit either..My buddy is not an internet user..I thought I could pop online and figure this one out in 15 mins..LOL..Doesn't look that way..
    Thx for the input,
    Rob
