low pop?

what is considered low pop? yea I know 1/1, 1/2 etc, ok, but what about 1/23, 1/39, or less than 10% of total graded, or 25%, etc. lets say 150 graded in all grades, and 26 were an 8, thats about 5.3% is that considered low pop? or 274 total graded and 63- 8's (22.9%) I am curious what is your opinion and why. Any insight appreciated. Happy easter.

  • I think your question might be a little too generic to just slap a label on whether a card is low pop or not.

For example, I collect 1968-69 OPC Hockey cards. If I found a 1/6 common I wouldn't consider it a low pop and a price realized on ebay probably wouldn't reflect a low pop. However, on a 1951 Bowman baseball that same 1/6 might command a huge premium because so many more people collect this set than one I collect.

Low pop doesn't really equate to a ratio of grades for the same card; it is actually a comparison of a particular grade for a card in relationship to other cards in the set with the same grade. In other words, if most cards in the set have 3 dozen 8s and another card has, say, 10, then the card with the 10 8s is a low population card.

Or I have this completely backasswards wrong.image
