Nolan Ryan Venezuelan Rookie card for sale

Hi...

Is anyone interested in purchasing a Nolan Ryan 1968 Venezuelan Rookie? I owned it a few years ago and the person I sold it to is looking to sell it. He just asked me if I knew someone that was looking for one, so I thought I would post it here in the Nolan Ryan thread. Hope that's OK. Check out the scan below. I believe he is looking for $1,300 for it and he will probably be listing it on eBay this coming week. The person selling the card is Stan Smith.

Why do 1968 Topps Nolan Ryan Rookie cards go for so much, even in poor condition. What is the difference between regular Topps and the Venezuelan Ryan card?

    Hi Gemmy10....

The main difference in the price is that the Venezuelan Topps cards were printed in Venezuela, South America in much less quantities than the American Topps version or the Canadian OPC version. That along with the fact that most of the cards were glued into sticker books makes them very hard to find in PSA gradeable condition. Most of the cards have paper missing on the backs from being pulled out of the sticker books that they were pasted in. Most of the cards only grade Poor-VG. The PSA EX-5 that I have has no paper loss because it was never pasted into a sticker book. image

Donato, the Topps version sells for quite a bit in poor condition also. Do you know why?

I'm not really sure about why the Ryan Rookie sells for so much other than Ryan collectors are willing to pay that price, although it has come down some over the last 5-7 years. About 10 years ago I remember the beckett price made it over $1,200 high book for the Topps Ryan rookie but now I believe it only lists at $500 high book.

  • The Ryan RC is VERY popular. However the price keeps coming down simply because there really are toooons of them out there. The Venezualen cards are indeed VERY scarce, and to find a Ryan as a 5 is simply incredible. Watch ebay. Simple commons with back tears still sell for a decent amount. This is easily one of the best investor quality cards in my opinion from the 60s. Another big one is the 58 Topps Herrer error card (no a in herrera). The 52 topps Sain error in mid-high grade is also quite tough.

    A couple of questions:

    1) What differentiates it from Topps if they look the same?
    2) If they basically look the same card, who cares?
  • Your reasoning is inaccurate. A poncho Herrera card with the "Herrera" in PSA 8 is $40. The same card with the a missing would probably be over $10,000 in PSA 8. Its just an "a" right? Basically rarity drives price and if it is a recognized variation than the market determines value.

Here is a Hererr link with pic...

They are not the same. It's like saying the OPC Canadian Ryan rookie is the same. The differences are not major, but there are differences. On the back of the card it says "HECHO EN VENEZUELA" meaning made in Venezuela. That to me makes it very different. Also on the front left side across from Jerry Koosman's ear there are three black print dots that are not on the American rookie card, but are on all the Venezuelan rookies that I have seen. Also the American rookie card has a glossy surface where the Venezuelan card has a flat surface.

Wow, you pay extra for print dots? LOL
  • He was simply listing the differences as you requested. Next time simply don't ask!

Venezuelans and the like are for amatuers, the smart money is on modern glossy cards.
