Sending in 106 1978 Topps next week

I am pretty excited about this sub. A wax box from baseball card exchange plus a dozen or so rack packs have been whittled down to 106 cards. I threw a few boners in the mix to hopefully give the grader some perspective. I am sure these guys eyes must pop from the sockets every day......

do all of you use penny sleeves with the pouches when submitting?

ALOT of low pop cards for the registry here! 38 that are pops of 12 and under in PSA 9 !!!

I just hope PSA does not give you a soft parade of grades. LOL

Good luck with the submission soft, I'm sure you have a few gems in there. I think soft sleeves are unecessary, and may be detrimental when dealing with condition sensitive stuff. They don't really add any extra protection if you're putting them in CardSavers, and putting the card in the sleeve is a step that could flake the soft corner/edge of a vintage Topps card. Basically, my philosophy is that you want to put any particular card in as few processes as possible in order to preserve it's condition. This is an extra step that isn't necessary, and I suspect that damage can be done while sliding the card out of the sleeve as well.

Soft ..............When I first started submitting cards , I did not use penney sleeves , but after reading these boards from what others have done and the advice usually given , was to insert the card into a penney sleeve for protection ! Those semi regid holders are so darn tight new , that it's a tight squeeze pushing the card downward into the sleeve ! Before inserting the card into a penney sleeve , snip the corners off , thus making it easier to slide the card into the penney sleeve without dinging the card ! Makes it easier for the grader to slide them out IMO ! GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR SUBMISSION ....................Robbie

  • softparade - what do you think of the cards that came out of the wax packs versus the rack packs? Which ones were in better condition in general? I'm assuming the wax packs had one card automatically ruined due to the gum - is that right? Also, is it 10 cards per wax pack - thus 9 possible good cards....and 39 cards per rack pack?

I'm thinking of building a nice set of 1978s .. and this seems like a decent way to go. It would be fun to open up packs and find never before seen cards.
  • another question regarding rack packs - are they searchable? If they are, I wouldn't want to purchase any rack packs through the internet, being afraid it has already been searched through. Maybe Cello packs may be better.

Lothar, I KNOW they aren't garbage image But popular opinion states otherwise, thus my sig image

kennylow ... In this instance the wax box was much more productive than the rack packs. Yes there was at least 1 card per pack ruined by gum, some packs had two cards ruined as the gum just bled right through. Its 14 cards per wax also ....

This box had unexpected great centering throughout . Only 3 stars that were sweet but MANY commons which was nice for me since I am the dummy attempting to build this set in graded fashion. Its a crap shoot really, this box came from the Baseball Card Exchange. I pulled OC Murray, Molitors, Brett to go along with top notch Yaz, Eck, Strikeout Leaders (Ryan) and some great tough TEAM cards. Bottom line is box was 100% legit. Some of these have gloss that looks dripping wet....... BEAUTIFUL I TELL YOU image

I want to tandem that thought with an honest statement that "modern" cards are not garbage either.
If people would get off of the investment bandwagon and adopt the principle that collecting anything is a hobby, then those items would become "pearls of gold!"

All this wisdom on Easter Sunday! Just another opinion.

I think the 1978 is a fantastic set. Best of luck to you. I would split the cards into two submissions. That's one dollar more per card, but I would hate for the grader to be having a bad day. JMO

That's a great thought! And, I would guess Mondays and Fridays are suspect - I will say, Dan has a really good eye - his last sub was off the chart!

Some of you know that I have been on the fence about whether or not to proceed with my favorite all time set in graded for various reasons. Let me just say that if I realisticly have to worry about a grader in a bad mood, or a sub-par grader enough to split the sub and spend more ............... this would lead me to jump on the raw side of the fence and dump my prized PSA'simage Actually, until March 31 splitting this sub would just cost more in shipping because there is no min. card amount in the special.

Stone, thanks for the kind words about my eye! But am just 2 subs old so we will see. I really hemmed and hawed over these, I'm such a dork my wife says. Really nice cards .... but I did throw in a few almost dogs just to give the grader some perspective ... I hopeimage

Stone, On a forty-five day turnaround submission, how can you ensure that cards are not graded on a Monday or a Friday?

Sure, but why get them graded? They look just as nice in an ultrapro sheet or top loader.

    Buc,

I like the Registry. That is 99% of why I am doing this set graded, and the ONLY set I am doing graded image This set is my all time favorite set and I would just love to complete it in super high grade AND let the world know about it and share it with scans in the registry

Why are you collecting your 61's graded? image

You mean the 61 All-Stars? They are all (relatively) expensive cards and there's only 22 of them. image The regular 61 set shouldn't be there in the Registry because it was a by-product of what I started on the AS and also, I've stopped building that set.
  • I agree with splitting the submissions. Send one in, wait a week or 2, then send the other in. You may be surprised how the grading goes. I had a guy do this and one group definately came out better than the other. Heck I even sent a PSA 2 back in raw and got a PSA 5. Same card, different grader, 2 months apart. food for thought.

  • Softparade, good luck on the sub. And your making great progress on the set. As the first person to reach 100% completion on the 78's graded i know exactly how tough this set can be. I've got to agree, if you go in counting 2 cards as junk in each pack you almost always get better results from the wax packs versus rack or cello - they wrap the cellos too tight and it dings the corners, same thing basically with the rack packs. The best results i've ever got came from a vending box actually, most of them are crap, but when you get a sweet one, its like heaven, i had one box of 500 one time that gave me around 50 10's and 150 9's - almost 200 perfect cards out of 500. On the other hand i've had vending boxes where i didn't get 1 stinkin card good enough to submit, (actually quite a few of those)

    Keep up the great work!

ps - make sure you check for surface wrinkles, i've had many sure "9's" come back as fives because of those things, you've got to be under a bright light and do the tilt thing back and forth to catch them.

Very cool. Good luck. I also enjoy the modern garbage and have been meaning to ask, what's the address for baseball card exchange? Everybody seems to speak highly of them for unopened material.

yep, I was and am aware of the tiny surface wrinkles. Every card as been inspected in bright light and tilted every which way. Out of the wax box I broke I found about a dozen with the surface wrinkles......

hey gfb, is your set still in the registry?
