Help with identification

I'm more of a sports card collector, but I've always enjoyed some non-sports as well, although never really collected them.

While at a local antique shop today I picked up these cigarette cars of screen stars from the past. They don't have any identification on them and the backs are blank. I'm thinking they are British, only because that seems to be where alot of these smaller cig cards seem to originate from.

Can anyone help id them (manufacturer, date, etc...)?

One thing I noticed about those old British cigarette cards, looking at them on ebay, is that they are so reasonably priced, usually sold in sets, and very colorful.

  • I believe those are DeBeukelaer cards issued in England and Belgium. They were inserted in cookie packages.

The gold film stars set was issued in 1939.

I couldnt tell what number was on the Myrna Loy card. But it was probably issued in the late 30's as well as they issued sets of 100 from 1930 to 1940
  • Thanks cubfan! That gives me something to go on. Although I haven't found anything on the gold cards yet, while I was resarching DeBeukelaer, I cam across the nmae of Bridgewater. Found a couple of auctions for Bridgewater on ebay and the cards look similar to the Myrna Loy card. BTW, the # is 35, it ehn says "Metro Goldwyn-Mayer" to the right of it.

Is there a standard catalog or price guide for such cards? There are so many different sets, I'm thinking of starting a "type set" collection.

  • You are correct about the Loy. I thought there were three digits to the card number. That card is from the 8th series of Bridgewater Film Stars from 1940. Those also came in cookies.

There are quite a few cards from the 30's that are either identical or identical in style that were issued by more than one company. Bridgewater/DeBeukelaer, Ogden's/Hignett's, and a few Carreras sets come to mind.

    Fun cards!
