Wanted: 86 Fleer BKB Pack Info

I would greatly appreciate any advice or information regarding 1986 Fleer Basketball Packs. I am looking to purchase (2) of them to store in my collection, and will be purchasing either graded packs or sending them in for grading upon receipt. So far I know this pack is notorious for being searched and resealed. Any hints for inspecting the packs for obvious signs would be real helpful. Also if you know of a good article or website that has information, that would be a big help too.

Thanks in advance,
The D man

i just picked one of these up this past week. ungraded for $150. i just noticed some had been going for less than $100. i am very skeptical of this.

    Thanks,

I know there is a pattern to the cards. I have opened one pack from Mark Murphy and I had two friends open packs from Murphy also. The cards came in alphabetical order. 5 were in sequence and the other 6 were in sequence. I wish I had written them down at the time but I didn't think about it. The pack I had contained Oakley, Olajuwon, and I remember a Parish. It was probably Oakley to Paxson (5 cards). The other sequence I think was in the C's. Maybe Cheeks to Cummings (6 cards). My sticker was Olajuwon. My other friend pulled a Barkley and the other friend pulled a Thomas. We payed $120 per pack back in the mid 90's. I think you could search the packs easily and find the Jordans if you knew what you were doing. I would think any 5 card sequence containing Jordan in alphabetical order would yield a Jordan. I found this peculiar when we were opening them. Does anyone else have any experience with this? PS I could never be an unopened pack collector. I couldn't wait 2 minutes to rip that pack open at the time. I got a PSA 9 on the Olajuwon!!

    thanks markmac
that explains why some packs are labeled "from a box"
i didnt know they came in alphabetical order
i picked up a couple a few yrs ago and hid them so i didnt open them! hiding works best for me

  • Wow, that would be very interesting to know for sure. If the cards are in sequence. Sure would make it easy to know which packs to sell and which to keep if you had a bunch of them.

Thanks again for all the comments,

  • Just my opinion here. Not referencing this particular seller or set.

I wouldn't buy packs from someone selling hand collated sets and sticker sets from the same year. Not to mention I also have many Authentic Jordan RCs both ungraded and graded!!!

    Again, JMO

  • I opened hundreds of these packs in 1986 and there is a sequence to the way the cards are packed. They are not in strict alphabetical order in the packs. Every other card is in alphabetical order. For example cards 1, 3, 5, 7, 9..... in the pack would be part of the same run, while cards 2,4,6,8.... would be part of another alphabetical series. So the card numbers coming out of a pack would look like this:

    54, 10, 55, 11, 56, 12, 57, 13, 58, 14......

It was very easy to pick out the packs that had Jordan, or any other star for that matter, by looking at the card on the top of the pack.

so if i open the packs and they are not in this type of sequence i can be assured they have been tampered with?

    Thanks,

    David (LD_Ferg)

  • ldferg: If they are not in this type of order then they have absolutely been tampered with. I have NEVER opened a pack where the cards were not in this order.

  • I am going to go ahead and buy a couple packs but I won't know about the order they are in because I don't plan to open them. I am however purchasing the Unopened Pack Guide from BBCKID whichs states that it explains how to tell if the packs are unopened. I will let you know how it turns out.

    Thanks for the great info:

received the pack just now. i opened it. here it goes from the back:

    erving - sticker
    29 - edwards
    96 - ruland
    30 - english
    97 - sampson
    31 - erving
    98 - schayes
    32 - ewing
    99 - scott
    33 - fleming
(the pack changes direction at this point/the cards are now upside down in sequence)
    122 - g wilkins - bottom left corner ding
    56 - v johnson
    123 - b williams

overall the cards look MINT with centering the same.

i'll send a few of these in for grading and see what grade they receive.

    Thanks,

    David (LD_Ferg)

  • Interesting, thanks for the followup.

Update on my packs: I received the packs and they appear to be in real nice condition. Waiting on arrival of Pack Guide to check authenticity/unopened. If that goes well I am sending them in for grading.
