I just cracked some 77-78 OPC packs...

and the cards are Mint except for some OC of course.

Now here's the thing. Each pack comes with a glossy insert and they are also MINT...but the gum is stuck to each one.

I managed to pull a stick off one insert and it caused paper loss plus there's gum residue left behind.

Is there a way to get the stick of gum to release from the card?

Steam? Goo Gone? Any ideas?

Or should I just chuck the glossys with the gum?

Any help appreciated. Thanks, Bob

Seems there was a related thread recently.
Someone suggested freezing or heating or both ?

How about soaking in water or using an iron over a cloth ?
If the alternative is chucking them, have some fun and experiment.

You can post a report on the results of the various methods.

  • I'm going to throw one in the freezer. I'll let you know if I have any luck.

I just ruined a Shutt trying to pull the gum off then rub off the residue.

I have a Cashman & a Clarke in the freezer now. Will let them sit til tomorrow night.

  • Pantyhose will definitely do the trick without damaging the card. I just took the wax mark off of a 1959 Topps Duke Snider. It came off clean without any surface damage to the card.

Ok, the Cash & the Clarke aren't ready yet. The gum is alot harder but it isn't seperating from the card any easier with the temperature change. I think I'll give them another day or two.

I just ate 1/2 a stick of the gum I yanked off the Shutt. Still very tasty for being 28 yrs old. It quickly broke into a million tiny chunks which I'm trying to get out of my teeth and gums as I type.

Sayhey kid- Pantyhose does work great on wax as does any soft cloth with the perfect amount of preasure. But 28 yr old adhered gum is a totally different monster. Welcome to the boards btw.

Probably going to stick these puppies in a shoe box with the other odds and ends I have, along with the wrappers, and forget about them. It was an amusing little experiment as wolfbear said
