1981-82 O-Pee-Chee Hockey Set Questions

I recently purchsed a lot from a gentleman, and in it were several hockey sets, most notably the 81-82 OPC set. There are several cards that very nice considering they are OPC (most notable the Denis Savard IMO). I don't normally deal with hockey at all, so I was checking SMR, EBay and Beckett to see what the sets tend to sell for and if I was better of grading some of the key cards (even if they were off-grade) or if I should just sell the set as is and move on.

I have included a pic of the key cards (I can provide better scans if requested). I am just wondering your thoughts on how I should move this. I know OPC is graded a bit more loosely in regards to the edges etc based on the horrendous cutting practices, but how lenient are they? I would imagine this is a highly collectible set based on the players, however I noticed the total pop is only 1440.

Any advice on what I should do?
Anybody interested in hockey anymore? image

  • I'd sell it as is. Why throw money towards grading when the results are uncertain? We've all read the "I was sure they were all 10's" threads. If you get a few 8's back you wasted cash.

EDIT: Looking at the scans I'd say the Bourque & Gretzky are 7's at best. The Gretzky SA, Messier & Coffey are all OC. The Savard & Moog are 8 maybe 9.

    Best of Luck.

So there's not much value even in 8's of this set then? I know they're not 10's, a couple borderline 9's, but I would put most on the 6-8 range depending on how lenient they are with edges. (Particularly the "extra" paper and the chipping that occurred) as I've never graded an OPC card in my life.
  • Without looking at the SMR and researching past sales on the bay all I can tell you is its a $400.00 set raw nrmt. If a couple hundred is all you need out of it, I'd throw it on Ebay.

That's where it will end up then. Thanks for the input.
