Does this Brazilian look UNC or is it a slider?

The 1889 500 Reis arrived yesterday and I just got around to getting pics of it. It is a very clean coin with very few hits but what is really throwing me off as to the grade is the hair curls. As you can see in the pic there is a flat area and I am not sure if it is from circulation or from a weak strike. What do you think? Is it a slider or a true UNC?image

I will be keeping it if it is UNC or AU because it is still a very nice coin for the price I paid.image

  • I would say weak strike looks just like a weakly struck morgan!
  • Looks like a weak strike to me as well. There are no other tell-tale markers indicating circulation.

  • I'd say slider, it looks like there are some luster breaks around the rim, unless that's the only true luster left, hard to tell from the photo.

Look at it under magnification, and check her shoulder, too. If the metal is a different color than the surrounding area and/or is duller/shinier, then I would go with the "slider" theory. Otherwise, I can't tell from the pic. If it is that difficult for you to tell in person, it must be a tough call.

PS- whatever the case, it's purdy. image

  • I will have to check the shoulder when I get back to my father's house. I do not have my loupe with me. As for there being breaks in the luster there are none. The coin has great cartwheel luster. My gut feeling is telling me weakly struck but I still like getting other people's opinons.image

I just said "check the shoulder", not because I know anything about these coins, but because that looks to be the other high point.

Without a loupe for a closeup, I say its a slider.

Could be either. That's one of the high points for wear on that design, and it looks like it might also have a touch of rub on the shoulder. But there are also weakly struck examples.

It's a tough call to make off a picture.

To determine weak strike you look at the detail in the lowest part of the strike, If the detail is clean and clear , the strike is good. A quick look at yours, with what appears to be a change of color in that curl would indicate to me that this is wear and this is a slider.
  • UNC or Slider Whatever. Still a great coin. These are hard to find around here in any original condition. Most have been cleaned. Seems to me old collectors in Brazil had no problem with cleaning their coins. Nice peice watever the grade turns out to be.

The new one's don't either, nor do the dealers. That's why you have to be really careful buying raw Brazilian coins off eBay, especially from someone in Brazil.

Whether its AU58 or MS62, if it's uncleaned you got a great coin. image

I've noticed the tendency for Brazilian coins to be cleaned, too.
