Crossover vs. Cracking it out WHAT TO DO?

I've got a few BGS 8.5 1999 Bowman Gold Refractors. I need them to grade PSA 9's. I've had success cracking out BGS 8.5s and getting 9's in the past but I have a few very expensive ones and can't risk damaging them by cracking them.

Any suggestions on what to do? I do not want them to crossover to 8's.

This seems to be the general thinking :

First try submiting it with the minimum grade you want it crossed to.
If it doesn't get crossed to that grade, then when you get it back, carefully crack it out and submit it.
