Does anyone know when Topps began

. . . putting "Topps" on the cellophane wrapping for their factory sets? I have '92 complete and '92 Topps Traded sets in cellophane that is completely unmarked.

They're whole boxes that I understood to be factory sealed. If Topps was putting its name on the cellophane itself as early as 1992, then it means what I have are boxes that might have been sorted and resealed, since there's no name on the wrapping itself. I just wondered when Topps started doing it.

I have a 97 set with Topps on the cellophane. My 92 set is clear as well. My 96 set, purchased from a hobby shop, does not have Topps on the cellophane FWIW.

I remember the sets being sealed back to 1987 at the factory - I remember reading the origin of the set was to be given to Sears and Penny's to sell in "remote" areas where people didn't have access to buying packs and stuff.
The earliest factory sets that I know of is 1974 which coincides with the removal of "series" from packs.
I would not be surprises if all were sealed way back to that date.

I have Topps Factory sealed sets back to 1986 in the colorful cellophane wrapped boxes. My 1997-2004 sets have 'Topps" printed on the cellophane to guarantee authenticity. First factory set was 1974 as Mike stated.

I've heard that factory sets were available in 1972 and 1973.

I always heard 1974 was the first factory set (the first non-series issue of Topps cards). I do know that there were several 3rd party vendors that compiled factory sets in the late '60's and probably further back. Look at any old Street and Smiths annual from the late '60's and you'll find them advertised in the back. I recall a complete '67 Topps set would sell for $12.95.

    Dude,

    Re: Street & Smiths annual

I believe you are talking about hand collated sets, not factory sets.

I can not prove that Topps factory sets existed in 1972 and 1973, but I have heard from reliable sources that they did. I also found a thread (in the CU forum archives) which briefly mentions the existence of 1972 Topps factory sets.

Very interesting link, Mikey, and not due to the topic, per se but due to the the member you are now responding to. Interesting how you were not anonymous at the time you posted about the 72's but somebody else was. Hehehehehehe.
  • Hey Ron,do you think "Coolidge" will disclose who those reliable sources are????? I'd like to know so I can talk to some of the.

And also, do you think Dan will figure out that Coolidge took off his colar when he put this face of Eve showed up and he put a chick in his sig line? Guess you can have your "Cake" and eat it too! Looks like he got up early today!

  • The last set that I did by hand was the 72 set. I bought a factory set in 73 and 74. Quit in 75 cause the cards looked to much like crap.

  • Mac53,

I have a 1989 Topps Factory set and a 1990 Bowman factory set with no markings on the cellophane as well. I believe it was sometime between 1995 - 1997 when they began marking the cellophane. image
