Good Question! I have seen some cards read PSA 8 NQ and some with just PSA 8. What is the difference? I am new to this PSA thing, but isn't a PSA 8 NQ... the same as a PSA 8? Why do the list some as a PSA 8 NQ and others just a PSA 8?
Say a card is an 8 in every way except it has a wax stain on the back. Which grade would best describe that card : PSA 6 or PSA 8 (ST) ?
Say a card is an 8 in every way except it has a small pen mark on the back. Which grade would best describe that card : PSA 1 or PSA 8 (MK) ?
As for the OC qualifier, a card that is graded a 9 (OC) could have better centering that an unqualifed 7 because the centering standards for a 9 are higher than for a 7.
I bet that if Dave Kingman took steroids he would of been the first 40-40 man and also hold all the HR records. All those towering fly balls outs he use to hit when he wasn't striking out would of been home runs.

A PSA NM-MT 8 is a super high-end card that appears Mint 9 at first glance, but upon closer inspection, the card can exhibit the following: a very slight wax stain on reverse, slightest fraying at one or two corners, a minor printing imperfection, and/or slightly off-white borders. Centering must be approximately 65/35 to 70/30 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the reverse.
Ok... Since I am still a new bee... I am going to get all of these stupid questions out of the way. I know where the gum stains come from.
What is a wax stain? How does a card get a wax stain? Why do some cards come out perfect and then you have some that looks like a blind person cut them?
Get rid of the qualifiers...too much damn subjectivity. Like someone said I have seen PSA 8 without qualifiers which were more poorly centered than a PSA 7 (OC)
Gemmy If this Lemon didn't have the OC qualifier, the grade I would give it, wouldn't do it justice IMO.
DS The packs used to be sealed on the back with real wax paper, so there was the possibility that some of it could leak on the card adjacent to the heated seal.
Like I said I have seen PSA 8 without qualifiers which were more poorly centered than a PSA 7 (OC). mike, for every example you give me I can give you one like I mentioned.
I know this is off topic, but I have to respond to they Kingman thing, back earlier in this thread ...
Steroids would make King Kong a 40-40 man?!? Well I agree he probably would have had a few more 40 homer seasons (he had just one, but 5 other seasons of 35+) but I really don't think he would have ever gotten the 40 steals. His career high was 16 as a 23 year old and he never again was in double digits.

The more I learn about the Qualifiers... The more I wonder why they have them. If everyone knows that you lose 2 points for a qualifier... Then why have them at all. I learn from another form that a PSA 9(ST) is the same as a PSA 7... so why have them at all... if everyone already knows this information...
Why Doesn't PSA Do Away With them? Just my two cents!!!
Near perfect centering; fresh gloss with very light surface imperfections; 4 square corners with a touch on the lower right corner; beautiful registration coupled with billiant colors and "pack fresh" cardboard. Looks better than the scan!
I was reminded of Dave Kingman because Wolfbear's post has a picture of him. When Kingman was young he was a quick runner. Steroids improve strenght and speed. I have lifted weights for over 20 years without steroids but I have lifted with steroid users who increased their bench press by 100 lbs in a month. Also remember Ben Johnson blew away everybody in the Olympics including Carl Lewis but lost the medal when he failed the steroid test.
I don't really mind the qualifiers. The only ones your going to see is OC and MK. Its all subjective, but I took a SGC 20 (1) bob feller rookie and cracked it out and got a PSA 3MK. The mark is some trace nearly faded away fountain pen marking on the top corner reverse. Doesn't detract from the card, but sure looks better than a 1 NQ!!
Hi guys, great subject. My feelings lean towards no qualifiers at all, but it is ridiculous to have an option. If a grading company uses them they should be consistant and use them on every card that they decide "deserves" one. I am a PSA fan but I think a straight 1-100 grading system is better.

You mean the way that SGC grades? What a wonderful idea!!
Think of it this way.
Say a card is an 8 in every way except it has a wax stain on the back.
Which grade would best describe that card : PSA 6 or PSA 8 (ST) ?

NM-MT 8: Near Mint-Mint.

This may sound like a stupid question but why would someone want to submit a card that has a stain, mark, off center etc.....??

Gemmy - I'm talking about a good sized stain, not a slight one.
DS1991Topps - many vintage cards are still quite valuable even with defects.

That would be generous - I don't think I would go that high?

Some people are OC freaks, but others are fanatical about corners.
For vintage cards i dont mind the MK qualifiers, sometimes i actually think it gives them a little history.
Not everyone collects for registry purposes, a qualified card can often be a bargain.
